Explosive 2009 report from Tulsa reveals deep corruption concerning Deputy Bob Bates
Source: DAILY KOS
This is a smoking gun concerning the millionaire Tulsa Reserve Deputy Bob Bates who shot and killed Eric Harris in March:
CBS News learned that in 2009, the Tulsa Sheriff's Office launched an internal investigation to find out if Bates received special treatment during training and while working as a reserve deputy. They also investigated whether supervisors pressured training officers on Bates' behalf.
The investigation concluded Bates' training was questionable and that he was given preferential treatment.
The investigation found that deputies voiced concerns about Bates' behavior in the field, almost from the very beginning. Bates reportedly used his personal car while on duty and made unauthorized vehicle stops. When confronted Bates said that he could do what he wanted, and that anyone who had a problem with him should go see the sheriff.

Pity real people die because of him. It makes you wonder just how badly treated others were because of this rich fool.

(3,595 posts)He probably heard where the only thing to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. So while guys like you were home watching Dancing...., he was out protecting your sorry ass. And what thanks does he get?
Yes, Arlene, don't get excited. It's sarcasm.

Is it me, is it the press, or are the killing by cop events increasing in number?

(11,518 posts)This entire situation is very strange. I don't get why someone as wealthy as Bob Bates would want to be a reserve deputy, all I can come up with is that he got his rocks off pretending to be a tough-guy cop. Not only should Bates be in jail, but so should anyone who is found to have contributed to his faked training and preferential treatment.

(7,318 posts)that he should never have been allowed to work as a deputy, then the family actually may be able to sue him personally. Usually, if a bona fide officer causes death the family would have to sue the department and be limited to a governmantal cap on damages.

(60,010 posts)and this newly uncovered investigation report is gonna make their job much easier.
However....
our trigger happy octogenarian is rich, so I would not be surprised to see a settlement.
Be nice if the Sheriff, who appears to be bought off by the old man, goes down with him.

(13,877 posts)Eric Harris is dead. Another Black While Running victim. Bates needs to go to jail AND pay a huge sum to the family. At least he won't be out on the streets again. Just another rich guy with nothing much to do...finding a new playground.
Also, another cellphone victory/hero. That's the only way we'll get them.

(23,664 posts)It's almost certain that there are people in that department who for one reason or another, dislike the sheriff so intensely they'd like to see him thrown out of office. Maybe they want his job, or maybe they just got on his shit list, but I guarantee you that there are people with a lot of dirt that they will be anxious to spread around. People who know where the bodies are buried. So to speak.
It's going to be tough on the sheriff and he probably won't survive it. At the very least he'll be accused of favoritism and lax standards applied to a political crony and financial backer. It will also be tough on the prosecutors who have to depend on assistance from the sheriff's office to do their job while prosecuting some of the top people in that very office.
It will be hardest of all on the taxpayers, who are going to wind up having to foot the bill for all the apparent favoritism and corruption that has led up to this.
These types of wannabe cop programs are almost certain to become a nightmare for the departments that implement them.
I'm familiar with two of them that were discontinued because the old farts that participated in them apparently learned everything the knew from watching "Cops" on TV, threw their weight around a little too forcefully and wound up pissing off the wrong people.
