Aggressive Effort Underway by Democratic Leaders to Recruit Elizabeth Warren
Source: New York Observer
The Observer has obtained private email correspondence among a small group of Democratic insiders that reveals a plan to recruit Sen. Elizabeth Warren to challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president.
The email, sent by Niko Elmaleh to a group that includes Andy Tobias, who has been the treasurer of the Democratic National Committee since Bill Clinton was president, and Jim Dean, the chairman of the nations largest political action committee, Burlington, Vt.-based Democracy for America. It was sent to Mr. Tobias personal email account and Mr. Deans DFA account.
Mr. Elmaleh, a reliable Democratic donor ($25,250 in 2012; $26,150 in 2008; and $31,000 in 2006) is the executive vice president of World Wide Holdings Corp, a New York City developer of luxury residential high-rise buildings that was founded by his father, Victor Elmaleh. Niko Elmalehs bio calls him an environmentalist and patron of the arts who supports charitable organizations including the Clinton Global Initiative, the League of Conservation of Voters, and Media Matters, the left-leaning media watchdog organization.
In his April 3, 2015, email to the small group, Mr. Elmaleh refers to his concern that a lack of a meaningful primary opponent will result in a stale and complacent candidate. He writes, I think we should seriously consider as an excellent way to keep Hilary fresh in the public eye; Elizabeth Warren should run against her.

Of course, this has to be carefully managed so that Warren can gracefully withdraw after performing this vital task. I dont think she can win yet (although she could in the future).

(59,498 posts)That Clinton becomes President. We are then looking 8 years into the future.
The only way I see her getting in if she "plays" Bobby Kennedy to O'Malley's Gene McCarthy. ie He does well enough in Iowa and NH to show that HRC can be beaten from the left. This is very unlikely because 1) this is not the world of 1968, 2) O'Malley is not McCarthy (ie a protest vote) and if he wins enough votes to beat or challenge Clinton (very unlikely) in the retail politics of Iowa - he will be the candidate. 3) Warren, though a rock star on the left, is not really in the position that Bobby Kennedy was.
Warren has said no many times - it would likely take something really big to change that. All I can think of is Clinton pulling out (right - after spending years of her time and that of others - not to mention, with all the attacks, it would be worse to decide not to run now than before she declared. Not going to happen. Nor is it likely that polls will show a huge loss to Republicans by her, but a win by someone else.

(23,156 posts)I'm remembering a young, charismatic state senator from Illinois who wowed everyone with a speech at the DNC in 2004. Everyone said he had an amazing future ahead of him, but of course he couldn't win the big office yet.
Wonder whatever happened to him.

(68,868 posts)For one thing, by this time Obama had already announced, raised a bunch of money, and hired staff in all the early states.
The Warren thing in 2016 is a dead parrot.

(70,447 posts)Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) pledged Wednesday to serve out her term and sought to pour cold water on the idea that she might run for president in 2016, according to the Boston Herald.
"I'm not running for president and I plan to serve out my term," Warren said at a news conference for Boston mayor-elect Marty Walsh, the Herald reported. Pressed further, Warren said she would "pledge to serve out my term."
Warren added: "I am not running for president. I am working as hard as I can to be the best (possible) senator I can be."
Warren's office confirmed the comments to Post Politics.

(11,514 posts)We really need to quit focusing on Elizabeth Warren as the only possible alternative to Hillary and come up with someone else. I'd absolutely love to see Warren run, but it's pretty apparent that it's not going to happen. I fear we're weakening ourselves if we can't get Elizabeth Warren out of our heads as a presidential candidate.
