Ben Carson Officially Announces Run For President In 2016
Source: Huffington Post
Celebrated neurosurgeon Ben Carson has officially announced his intention to run for president.
Im willing to be part of the equation and therefore, Im announcing my candidacy for President of the United States of America," Carson told Ohio's WKRC.
USA Today reports Carson also told WPEC in Florida that he will be a part of the 2016 race. Carson is expected to speak on his presidential run at an event in Detroit on Monday.
A darling of the conservative movement, Carson enters a crowded Republican field jostling for position ahead of what is expected to be a very competitive primary. He maintains a large following with grass-roots conservatives, which is likely to put him on a collision course with other potential rivals who are popular on the right, such as Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

I suspect you're right about that. But maybe the guy really is that delusional, who knows?

(47,953 posts)Turns out that despite strict Federal Election Commission rules, Bayh and other exiting elected officials do have ways to keep unspent political contributions.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, there are 25 senators and representatives this year who have announced their retirement and who are collectively sitting on $31 million in authorized campaign committee cash.
While the F.E.C. clearly says campaign committee cash can't be tapped for personal use, there are no such stipulations for certain political action committees, most controversially "leadership PACs" that elected officials can use to support various political causes other than their own.
Lucrative Loophole
Of the 25 members of Congress who have said they are stepping down, 18 have leadership PACs with a combined $850,000, according to CRP analysis.
"There's a wide gap, if not a gulf, between what lawmakers can do with regular campaign money versus leadership PAC money," said Dave Levinthal, communications director for the Washington, D.C.-based CRP. "The question comes up: What can politicians do with the leftover PAC money, and the answer is pretty much whatever they want."

Now if he believes either of these things he is seriously intellectually challenged and if he does not believe them but is saying them to pander to his right-wing racist base then he is seriously ethically challenged for making such irresponsible, outrageous claims that he KNOWS are false in order to win votes.
Either way, he's the token black candidate like Herman Cain was in 2012. No shot at winning but he's good at making the bigots in the Republikkkan Party feel like they "are not racists."

He is overcompensating a bit, and is also displaying some very typically nouveau riche behaviour (I made it, so all the people I left behind must not be trying hard enough). Still, if he ever obtained the nomination, he would probably win the election.

(492 posts)Pol Carson is irrational, illogical, and delusional. His medical brilliance will not cover up his political dimness. I admired tremendously his achievements, admired even more the mother who guided and helped him succeed and who, despite her own illiteracy as an adult, was able at an advanced age to learn and, through immensely hard work, earn her High School diploma.
Bravo to them both!
But it was with much chagrin that I discovered Dr. Carson's entry into politics to be filled with tired and ludicrous right wing fantasy and, sadly, a disdainful abhorrence of serious inquiry into issues that tear at the heart and soul of the Country.
As a doctor, he was an angel. As a politician, a buffoon. I do not believe that he would offer a challenge to any -- any -- Democratic nominee.
shaayecanaan
(6,068 posts)He's pulling down seven figures a year being a neurosurgeon, mostly everyone else from his childhood is probably still dirt poor. He can rescue his mum, maybe his immediate family, but then what do you do? You can still go to your childhood best friend's birthday party if you like, but only certain people have the panache to pull something like that off. If not its pretty bloody awkward pulling up in your Maybach.
Most people in that situation try and put as much mileage between themselves and the poverty of their childhood as they can, and unfortunately that's what he's doing. Bit tragic really.

(9,350 posts)You wrote that if he were to win the nomination he would likely win the election. I doubt he would win the election. Most Americans are opposed to his views. He pretty much so wants to get rid of the entire safety net system. If he just wanted to get rid of TANF and SNAP maybe he would have a chance. However, he also wants to get rid of Medicare and Medicaid. He may also want to get rid of Social Security. In 2012 two guys like him ran for election and they got stumped. I do not see how his being a neurosurgeon would make a difference for him.

(9,350 posts)I doubt that Dr. Ben Carson would change his views, or begin to express different views. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan run in the general election with the same ideas. First, I just to not think he would move to the center to win. Second, if Romney/Ryan did not move to the center on those issues what makes you think Carson would move to the center?

(11,175 posts)Either of them, as the Governor of a large Midwestern state (Ohio and Michigan, respectively), would have a better chance in November than some of the wackier right-wingers.
Fortunately, neither has much chance of getting the nomination. Aside from their low name recognition, each has committed heresy in the eyes of the conservative base. Kasich supported Medicaid expansion. Snyder supported anti-discrimination protection for gays and lesbians (I don't know if it would include transpersons).

I participated in a large study of TEA party rallies for a liberal organization.
They took lots of photographs of crowds and did random surveys of the participants. Black males (generally ex-military), Protestant Hispanics, and Jewish people were over-represented at the TEA Party rallies. Asians and non-church going, but self-identified Catholic, Hispanics were under-represented.
No one could ever figure out why, or at least they didn't share that info with me.
They do do a good job at crushing the overt racist types (e.g., David Duke, etc) so the bad press is averted.
