Nutter: At least 5 dead as Amtrak train derails in Port Richmond
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
At least five people were killed and 50 were injured when a northbound Amtrak train derailed Tuesday night in Port Richmond, Mayor Nutter said.
Scores of emergency personnel swarmed over more than half a dozen toppled train cars, trying to reach injured and dazed passengers.
Some people were reported trapped in the train, and crews were cutting into the cars to try to free the injured.
Ladder 10 was the first to respond to the scene. When firefighters arrived, they found two people under the train, a fire official said.
Train 188, bound to New York City from Washington, had stopped at 30th Street Station just minutes before the accident, which occurred near a curve near Wheatsheaf Lane and I-95.

(5,069 posts)One could only hope in the government's visions of infrastructure improvements that our 3rd world class rail system could be addressed and we could at least move up to 2nd world status.

as they were rescuing and searching for people. I also heard him say that he was in the dining car when it went off the rails.
Several survivors called into MSNBC to give eye-witness reports within the hour after the accident occurred.
Former Congressman Murphy was one of those.

(53,661 posts)The emergency response is good, but they still don't know all the casualties, some are missing or unaccounted for. With 5 confirmed dead and 75 injured seriously, this may go much higher.
Investigators are on the scene along with emergency and medical crew. The link is very good, giving the best report I've read in recent years.
These are very bad injuries. This happened very fast. Good luck to all workers and surivors and condolences to the families.
