Mohammed Morsi: Egypt's ex-leader sentenced to death
9 minutes ago

from the section Middle East

An Egyptian court has sentenced ousted president Mohammed Morsi to death over a mass prison break in 2011.

The former leader has already been sentenced to 20 years in jail for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters during his time in power.

Morsi was deposed by the military in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule.
Since then, the authorities have banned his Muslim Brotherhood movement and arrested thousands of his supporters.

All death sentences must first be sent to the Grand Mufti, Egypt's highest religious authority, for his opinion on whether they should stand.

The Arab spring has been quite firmly put back to winter. This verdict seems ridiculous. Although Morsi may have overplayed his hand he did not seem like a bad person, but more of a no good choices situation. Now with the new govt you will never see those mass protests as they are immediately stomped out. Just really depressing.

3. Morsi is a good man ... he should have refused to play puppet

to the violent elements of MB.

MB did not win the elections fair and square -- they had moderate front-men running, used intimidation to keep opposition votes away and many secular opposition parties boycotted the elections. Also, a lot of votes for MB were protest votes i.e. anyone but XXX.

Too late for Morsi to realize that playing puppet has its consequences ... hopefully others will learn and benefit from it.

5. The Muslim Brotherhood won the elections. The military overthrew them in a bloody coup.

Millions of Egyptians played themselves for suckers by refusing to accept the MB victory and organizing to defeat them at the polls next time. Now, they get the same old Mubarek deep state, without Mubarek.

Long live pharaoh.

6. A majority of Egyptians want a secular, progressive state

and not the backward looking fundamentalist Islam state. Unfortunately, the secular-liberals were powerless against the heavily armed and violent muslim brotherhood.

Thank heavens for Fateh al Sisi.

"the secular-liberals were powerless against the heavily armed and violent muslim brotherhood."

The secular liberals lost the election and were too immature to wait and win one. They never accepted the results of the election. And they were led around by the nose by the military.

The "armed and violent" MB never controlled the repressive apparatus of the state.

I don't know how you can call a military dictatorship a progressive state. This is Mubarek's deep state without Mubarek.

Where are those secular liberals now? In jail with Morsi.

Egypt had a chance at real democracy. Egypt's secular liberals blew it.

7. Issued the day of death sentence in the Boston bomber case.

And that was not an accident. To hide news you have to release but do not want to release; it is an old practice to release it the day something worse will take the front page . The Boston bomber death sentence would take front page in the US but off page one in Egypt if Morsi is sentenced to death the same day. Amtrak crash in Philadelphia is even better but not planned for( to irregular the Boston bombing case was predictable as to being front page even if the Boston bomber had had NOT been sentenced to death).
