Senate candidate Loretta Sanchez appears to disparage American Indians

Source: sacramento bee

Two days after entering the race for the U.S. Senate, Rep. Loretta Sanchez met with an Indian American group on Saturday and mimicked a racial stereotype of American Indians.

In a video shown to The Sacramento Bee and posted online shortly after, Sanchez, D-Santa Ana, describes a pending meeting she had with an East Indian.

“I am going to his office, thinking that I am going to meet with a,” she said, holding her hand in front of her mouth and making an echo sound. “Right? ... because he said Indian American.

In 2000, as vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Convention, she raised eyebrows by scheduling a fundraiser at the Playboy Mansion. Al Gore, then the Democratic nominee for president, joined party leaders in complaining about the optics, and Sanchez’s slot as a featured speaker was revoked.

children's cowboys-and-indian TV shows and movies in the fifties.

She was insulting Native Americans, while describing a meeting with people from India (surprised she didn't do the "forehead dot" and accent mimicry).

Ugh. Bad scene. Not what we do as a party. Not sure how she walks that back.

At California Democratic Party convention, Senate candidate makes whooping gesture Attorney General Kamala Harris calls it ‘shocking’ Sanchez would not say if gesture was an appropriate one
U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez was criticized after making a remark about American Indians that Attorney General Kamala Harris criticized.

She didn't give it the full "Pow Wow, The Indian Boy" treatment, but there was no mistaking what she was doing.

She's not ready for the upper chamber...!

Her success is by no means assured.

Her judgment failed her in this instance, certainly.

A case could be made for Lorretta Shanchez' long history and experience in Congress.

A case could also be made for Harris remaining open to accept an Attorney General slot in a Clinton or Sanders administration. I'd hate to see her yanked out of the Senate to be AG.

elizabeth warren and emily's list has also endorsed Harris. if not Harris then Newsom would probably have got into the race and he would also probably beat sanchez.

Also, does she have a past history of cluelessness about things like this?

their school buses over and incite their children to attack them back in the South Side of Oklahoma City, about 1971. You couldn't get a Repub elected there - they got shot at.

I had respect for Loretta Sánchez because she slayed Bob Dornan but coming from union roots, she has become an embarrassment.

Loretta Sanchez apologizes
http://www.buzzfeed.com/katherinemiller/this-one-really-happened

“In this crazy and exciting rush of meetings yesterday, I said something offensive, and for that I sincerely apologize,” Sanchez told hundreds of delegates Sunday on the closing morning of the state Democratic Party convention in Anaheim.

Sanchez said she was proud of her record defending the rights of Native Americans.

“They know my record,” she said. “They know how much I have spent, the time that I have spent with them at their tribal councils, listening to them, advocating for them. They know that I have always had their backs.

“And they know what many of you don’t know — that like so many Mexican Americans, I am proudly Native American on my mother’s side.”

...hmm. Probably not enough. Perhaps he should say why she believes it's inappropriate and inexcusable.

of the race. Once you start making comments like that you don't deserve to even run for senate let alone dog catcher. It shocks me that as a minority she would make fun of another minority.
