Honolulu mayor vetoes expanded sit-lie ban

HONOLULU (AP) Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has vetoed a bill that would have expanded the city's ban on sitting and lying down on sidewalks.
Caldwell said Thursday that the city would face legal challenges if he signed Bill 6 into law. His administration is proposing an alternative that he says the city can defend.
Caldwell has been a champion of the city's bans on sitting and lying down on sidewalks. The prohibition began in Waikiki after complaints from the tourism industry. It has since been expanded to include Chinatown and other commercial areas.
But the latest bill includes areas beyond sidewalks, and Caldwell says that presents a problem. He's asking the council to sign his alternative bill that only includes sidewalks.
