53 people in 9 states sickened after eating raw tuna

Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak likely linked to raw tuna that has sickened 53 people in nine states.

The California Department of Public Health said Thursday that 31 of the cases are there. Other affected states include Arizona, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Ten people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

The source of the outbreak is unknown, but most who fell ill reported eating sushi containing raw tuna.

I wonder if it will be okay to name restaurants involved if they are owned by a corporation outside the US? Because that would affect profits, ya know!

Comes from the Gulf, won't eat it. don't need 3 eyes on the shrimp or on me. Comes from Thailand, don't want slave labor food. Comes from Vietnam, have been warned on hos they feed their fish farms pig poop and bribe food inspectors. Not interested in that either.
I am convinced there is a plot to make me a vegetarian. And with that, I try and buy as much from local farmers.
Does this mean you can't buy particular brands of meat? I like to by a brand of beef (expensive) that is grown on one farm that is supposed to welcome cameras and kills their cows humanely.

Unless and animal is sick or dying and euthanasia is the right choice. Exploitation is not humane.

a slaughter house.
I am not a vegetarian and have digestive issues that would prefer me not to eat many raw veggies (very pro cooking), can't eat beans, can't eat tofu.
SOme scientists are more and more sure that vegetables have intellect and can feel pain. I pet my trees and converse with my plants periodically.

Are you next going to tell a hawk that it's inhumane to kill and eat a rat? Inform a lion that hunting a gazelle for dinner is in humane?

There are animals born to be carnivores, and there are animals born to be omnivores. That means that in nature, something is going to die and be dinner. People are omnivorous animals, and there is nothing immoral about eating a diet that includes a reasonable proportion of meat. The rest of the vegan argument that it's "healthier" not to eat a natural diet, or that we have a "moral" obligation to renounce being omnivores because we have the brain power to mostly make it work for our bodies, is no different than an anti-choice propaganda based on arbitrary "rules" made up by their imaginary sky-friend.

We have no need to consume animal products. It's a stupid and ineffective argument to compare the actions of animals to humans.

I don;t favor cruelty, but the fact is that animals killing and consuming other animals is completely natural.

Is it completely natural for humans to mate without consent? does that make it ok for humans to do so? Some snakes are cannibals... does that make it ok for humans to be as well? Is it ok to mate with our parents and siblings or no?

I'm fine with you deciding you don't want to eat other animals. But I don't think you're making an effective argument that not eating animals is somehow for the good order of society.

You eat the way you want but you can't push your "beliefs" on others. You have the right to feel the way you want and others feel what they want.

Tunas are the most pelagic fish in the ocean, and they're extremely fast - 100 days to swim across the ocean.

makes me ill. I have digestive problems and can't eat some things kind of like a sampler system, I can eat some fish, but not all fish, some shellfish but not all shell fish, some meats but not others, some veggies but not others, just weird.

So you are saying that Tuna are the most unpredictable fish because they could have been anywhere. We are all connected in the world, so we can't escape everything, I would just like to know the name of who caught it, ha ha . At the beach, there is a restaurant that serves only fish that came off the small boats that day. It is delish!!! But they never have tuna.

A tuna not only will swim the length and breadth of the ocean in a very short period of time, it is not a finicky eater: if it's small enough to fit in a tuna's mouth (which is huge), and a tuna is in the area, down the hatch with it. And they eat continuously.

Yeah, eating raw tuna is in the top five "dumb things you can do" list.

have to be flash frozen on the boat to kill liver flukes and other parasites, the main danger that comes from eating raw fish.

Unfortunately, that doesn't stop contamination in the processing plant.
