Volcano warning raised for Mt. Hakoneyama after small eruption reported

The Japan Meteorological Agency raised its volcanic eruption warning to Level 3 for Mount Hakoneyama on June 30 after evidence showed a small eruption had hit the mountain southwest of Tokyo.

The previously Level 2 warning called for people to stay clear of the likely crater in the Owakudani area on Hakoneyama in the event of an additional eruption.

The Level 3 warning widened that area by 700 meters. The agency said large rocks could fall from another eruption, creating a bigger risk for climbers in the popular tourist area.

According to the agency, a new fumarole, or vent, was discovered in a survey on June 29, and the research team found volcanic ash near the fumarole the following day.
