Thai ice cream company apologizes for homophobic slur

A Thai ice cream company has apologized after its attempts to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage on its Facebook page at the weekend backfired badly.

Wall’s Thailand’s post sparked online uproar among Thais over the weekend after it used a derogatory reference towards gay men, with some commentators calling it “low” and “discriminatory.”

The illustration, which was quickly removed, showed black bean-flavored ice cream with the caption #LOVEWINS.

“Black beans” (tua dam in Thai) is a demeaning slang term for anal sex that is seen as derogatory towards gay men. The term originated from a famous pedophilia case from the 1930s.
