Obama Says He’ll Walk Away From Iran Talks If Terms Can’t Be Met

As negotiations with Iran enter the closing phase, President Barack Obama said he’s still prepared to walk away from the talks if the Islamic Republic can’t meet the terms set out by the U.S. and its partners.

The “deep-seated” distrust between the U.S. and Iran won’t dissipate quickly and the negotiators for the major powers in discussions with Iran will insist that any agreement to cut off Iran’s path to gaining a nuclear weapon must be verifiable, Obama said at a White House news conference with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

“I will walk away from the negotiations if in fact it’s a bad deal,” he said. “Given past behavior on the part of Iran, that simply can’t be a declaration by Iran and a few inspectors wandering around every once in a while.”

Obama also said the U.S. will keep up pressure on Iran over Americans being held in Iranian prisons to make sure they are afforded basic legal protections.

Iran Nuke Talks Deadline Extended To July 7

Oren Dorell, USA TODAY 3:37 p.m. EDT June 30, 2015

U.S. and other world powers gave themselves seven more days to seal the deal with Iran on limiting its nuclear program as President Obama reiterated Tuesday he would walk away from a bad agreement.

U.S. and Iranian negotiators in Vienna agreed to extend the deadline from Tuesday night to July 7 as they remained far apart on key issues. Even if a deal can be reached by the new date, differences in the interpretation of the latest interim agreement show the obstacles of executing an accord.

The deadline was extended "to allow more time for negotiations to reach a long-term solution" on the Iran nuclear issue, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.

Along with the announcement to extend the talks, a senior Western official told USA TODAY that Iran has reduced its stockpile of low-enriched uranium to 7.6 tons in compliance with an agreement it signed in November 2013. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the confidential report.

Or, that's the way it will be spun by the neocons who expected this to fail all along. Can the US possibly be this cynical? Sure, we can.

Let's hope I'm wrong.

more likely would just extend talks or have some sort of quasi agreement that allows for some claims of success.

The question is, do the Iranians really want one? Pretty sure the Iranian people do, but what about their leadership?
