American Ballet Theatre names Misty Copeland their first black principal dancer in its 75-year histo

Misty Copeland, a soloist with American Ballet Theatre, will become its first African-American female principal ballerina, the dance company, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, said on Tuesday.
Copeland, 32, joined American Ballet Theatre in 2001 and has been a soloist with the prestigious dance company since 2007.
She was among several dancers given new roles at a meeting the company held on Tuesday.

(15,805 posts)I've only been to two ballet performances and the dancers were spectacularly beautiful athletes. Good for her, she will inspire many more little girls to explore classes in ballet dancing.

Aussie Rules football is a pretty rough and tough sport. In the 70s, an Australian TV channel arranged for 3 Aussie Rules footballers to do ballet training for a week and for 3 ballet dancers to train as Aussie Rules footballers for the same period (sorry no link). One group found it really hard, the other found it quite easy. Guess which group found it hard.
