Same-sex couple in Mississippi goes to court to seek divorce
Source: AP
By JACK ELLIOTT JR
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood has asked the state Supreme Court to allow a lesbian couple to seek a divorce.
Hood sided Thursday with a similar request filed by the attorney for Lauren Czekala-Chatham (chick AH' luh-CHAT' um), who argued a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on June 26 requires all states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other states.
That was key to Chatham's arguments as she seeks a divorce from Dana Ann Melancon (muh LAWN' sawn). They were married in California in 2008.
FULL short story at link covers a judge ruled they can't get divorced.

(1,570 posts)If it's two women, how's the judge suppose to know who gets the house, cars and alimony payments?
mopinko
(70,090 posts)if both are similarly situated, and able to make a living, there wont be any alimony, and the marital estate will be split 50/50.
that is how it works.
it just happens that many married women give up careers to raise kids. they are protected in divorce as they should be. same sex partners who do the same deserve the same.

(21,054 posts)I hope they know that if they were married in CA, there are provisions to get a divorce in CA even if they are no longer CA residents. The residency provision is waived under CA law due to the fact that same sex marriages were not recognized in all states when this divorce was done.
