Man accused in San Francisco Pier 14 shooting admits to crime

Source: KGO TV ABC7

In an interview you'll see only on ABC7 News, the man accused of shooting and killing a young woman at San Francisco's Pier 14 admitted to the crime and talked about where he got the gun.

Francisco Sanchez didn't recall every detail because he says he doesn't remember everything that happened. But in the 45 minute jailhouse interview, he revealed how the shooting went down and why he kept returning to the United States after being deported numerous times.

...

Barnard: "Where did you get the gun?"
Sanchez: "In the ground. When the... when the... over there in the bench, um, um, I put my leg and I see the one T-shirt and then see over there something like that."

He claims a gun was wrapped in that T-shirt and that it went off when he picked it up.

"Then suddenly I heard that boom boom, three times," Sanchez said.

Also:

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi told KGO 810’s Pat Thurston that ICE should have never turned Sanchez over to the county because he entered the country illegally.

Public defender Jeff Adachi says, “ICE knew what the policy was in San Francisco in terms of noncooperation so I think it’s disingenuous for them to say well geez we’re shocked by what happened.”

ICE turned over Sanchez to the SF authorities, because of a 10-year-old marijuana possession warrant.

Listen to the full Pat Thurston interview with Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, Public Defender Jeff Adachi, and SF Chronicle columnist Debra J. Saunders here.

Sanchez also told ABC7 that he moved to SF because he knew about the city's sanctuary policy. That had to have been the case back in the mid 2000s, around the time he was caught in SF with marijuana (and somewhere down the line he committed more severe crimes outside of SF). It's important to know that Sanchez recently completed a five-year federal prison sentence for illegal re-entry.

Now he claims he found the gun, picked it up and "boom! boom! boom!" it just went off. Oh, and he doesn't remember much because he was zonked out on sleeping pills he also happened to conveniently find in the trash.

What a piece of work, this guy.

This may have been a horrible accident. If Sanchez would have had mental health counseling this crime would most likely not have happened. If our country had real gun control this tragedy would not have happened. If Sanchez had a job and a home to sleep in Ms. Steinle would still be alive.
The people and organizations who resist common sense laws are responsible for her death, the companies that make the guns and ammunition are responsible, the dealers of death licensed by our government who sell the guns and ammunition are the ones with blood on their hands!

Homelessness is irrelevant, employment is irrelevant, as is mental health counseling (there are no indicia that he has a mental health problem.) The rest of your statement is exaggerated at best.

the murser wouldn't have happened. He would have been a thousand miles away in a totally different country.
And he was already in violation of federal firearms laws by being a felon in possession of a firearm. What other laws could have solved it? Just make guns illegal? Hell, just ban the common cold, while you're at it.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been deported for niggling crimes, like drug possession, including people who have lived their whole lives here. That's why there's a sanctuary city movement.

I fully expect anti-immigrant people to make as much hay of this tragedy as they can.

and chose to reenter unlawfully.

Drug possession is not a minor crime. For immigration purposes, it is a crime of 'moral turpitude' that renders the offender unable to obtain a legal immigration status unless s/he obtains a waiver of some sort.

You may argue over whether certain drug crimes shouldn't rise to the level of 'moral turpitude' that affects immigration status, but this individual was deported not once, but 5 times.

The only thing that didn't work was the San Francisco authority who refused to comply with ICE's request.

We see what institutional disregard for the law gets us. The city of San francisco failed this woman. This wasn't some innocent guy that was found with a joint. This guy was a criminal that didn't deserve to be here.
And you would think that if you sneak into a country you're not supposed to be in, you'd be on your best behavior.
This guy had no respect for the law. Neither did the city. And a woman paid with her life. I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison, and the woman's family sues the city for millions.
