Point Park drops faculty union challenge, will enter collective bargaining

By Adam Brandolph

Point Park University will end a longstanding challenge over the ability of its full-time faculty to unionize, the university announced Monday.

Collective bargaining will likely begin in the next couple of months, a lawyer representing the union said.

“This administration just doesn't care to have a fight with its faculty,” said Point Park President Paul Hennigan, who took over at the Downtown school in 2006. “We're not interested in having this dispute looming over our heads. We're more focused on the mission of higher education.”

The full-time faculty voted in 2003 in favor of joining the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh/Communications Workers of America. The university appealed after the National Labor Relations Board certified the union. After bouncing back and forth between the U.S. Court of Appeals and the NLRB, the appeal sat dormant from 2007 to February 2015, when it was remanded back to the regional NLRB.
