DA: Police Misconduct in Tennessee Man's Death Unlikely

Source: AP

A Tennessee man who died hours after he was detained by police in Mississippi had been hogtied face-down on a stretcher, according to a witness.

But a state official said later Tuesday that a preliminary investigation indicates no police misconduct.

Multiple news outlets report that 30-year-old Memphis chemical engineer Troy Goode died in a hospital Saturday night, two hours after being detained by the Southaven Police Department.

Tim Edwards, a lawyer for Goode's family, told the Associated Press on Tuesday, "Positional asphyxiation is what we believe was the most likely cause of death."

I am a member on another online forum where one of the members recently died after an interaction with the police.

Troy Goode was a 30 year old chemical engineer and fan of the band Widespread Panic, he was going to a concert the evening he died but prior to going inside he started acting erratically and he and his wife left without attending the concert as they were driving away they stopped in a parking lot near a restaurant, and his wife was trying to calm him down but he jumped out of the car, and while she was trying to calm him someone observed his behavior and called 911 to report a domestic disturbance, this brought the police to the scene where the situation escalated and led to his arrest for disturbing the peace.

At some point the police came to the conclusion that Troy had overdosed on LSD, and this was the cause of his erratic behavior, but witness reports say that he wasn't violent or threatening but did back away and try to run away from the police. Some say that without toxicology reports there was no way to indicate whether this behavior was due to heat stroke which can reportedly cause confusion disorientation, and erratic behavior or whether he had indeed ingested drugs, or was suffering from some other kind of illness mental or physical.

There are a lot of rumors going around about the details of the events that led to his untimely death. But the facts that are coming out appear to show that the police used a questionable method of restraining him during his arrest, hog tying him face down, with a restraint over his head, his arms tied to his legs and his torso also strapped down this after one of the officers sat on his back, he stated many times that he was unable to breathe and had asthma, even his wife told the police that he needed his inhaler and had asthma however sometime after his arrest, he was taken to a hospital where he died.

This man was a young father with a wife and child, the wife was forbidden to ride in the ambulance or even wait at the hospital and was told that she would be arrested if she didn't leave the hospital.

It's really a tragedy, that was completely unecessary, police EMTs and firefighters, all need to be trained on how to handle people that are in confused states, that could be caused by heat stroke, drug overdose, diabetic reactions etc... I am sure that the family will pursue an investigation into how he died in either the care of the EMTs or the hospital and why his wife was threatened and forced to leave the hospital

At one point the family was told that Troy Goode was in stable condition and then two hours later they were told he died.

Since his death fans of the band have started trying to raise awareness of the events that led to his death along with trying to raise money for his family and for the future of his child. They have created online links on Facebook to share the details of this tragedy and ask for donations for his family

Here is another link to a Washington Post story about the incident from a couple of days ago.

It seems that either through lack of training on how to handle specific situations, incompetence, negligence lack of common sense, use of procedures that have been banned because of the risk of injury and so on

I didn't see your original post on this topic and thought that this was timely to the discussion about police citizen interaction since there are so many of these kinds of stories lately

The reason I posted the picture of Troy Goode was to show that this was not a case of CWB - concertgoing while black.

Not protect you. Officers are only trained to take people down, not save them from harming themselves or others.
