Arrest made, 8-year-old girl found dead in Santa Cruz search

SANTA CRUZ >> After more than 24 hours of searching for a missing 8-year-old girl in Santa Cruz, Madyson “Maddy” Middleton was found dead in a dumpster behind the Tannery Arts Center just before 8 p.m., Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said late Monday.

“We have arrested and taken into custody a 15-year-old male who was on the property at the time of the discovery,” Vogel said.

That teenager, who lives at the Tannery, is being detained and questioned in relation to the homicide of Maddy, Vogel said. It’s unknown if the teenager knew Maddy.

Detectives will remain on the scene throughout the night serving search warrants and sifting through evidence.

10. The 15-year-old male has been charged. He could be tried as an adult. He raped the little girl and

dumped the body in a garbage bin. He also was one of the volunteers in the search for the little girl.

This story is so sickening. I really hope they try the 15 year old as an adult. I am so sorry for the family of the little girl.

11. Watching KRON4 local news now. They say he will be identified in about 3 hours.

I think I remember reports last night that they found incriminating evidence in his apartment. The photo of him being escorted by police looks like he could be either Latino or Asian. It just shows him from a 3/4 back view. He also looks very muscular.

I haven't lived in SF very long. Do they ID minors who've been arrested?
