Obama won't alter terms of spy Jonathan Pollard's parole, White House says

Source: Haaretz

President Barack Obama has no intention of altering the terms of Jonathan Pollard's parole, the White House announced on Tuesday night. The announcement indicates that that Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence officer convicted of spying for Israel, will have to remain in the U.S. for five years after his release from prison in November.

The White House further reiterated that Pollard's release has no link to foreign policy considerations.

The U.S. Parole Commission has ruled that Pollard will be released from prison on November 21. Pollard will complete a 30-year sentence despite efforts by successive Israeli governments to secure his early release.

If he can escape to Israel and never re-enter the US, he would be OK. No way Israel extradites him if asked to.

the parole, and would go back to prison in that case.

Assuming the President doesn't wave the terms of the parole, which he can do, but has explicitly said he won't, means that he would need to do as you suggest, escape out of the country. I am not sure how easy that is. Traveling on international flights requires a passport, and I doubt he has been granted one, so they would have to smuggle him out as you implied

Any kind of passport, private transportation. That isn't an issue if Israel wants to get him out.

If his escape is broken up, will he have his parole invalidated and go back to prison?

lobbied for Pollard's early return to Israel.

It is time to reconsider our close relationship with Israel.

This guy was caught spying on the US for Israel. How is it that Israel has been pressuring us to release him? You would think they'd never want to bring the guy up again. How is it they've used his case to pressure the US whenever they wanted something?

Judge O'Kicki had a good racket going, he would sentence criminals to the maximum sentence possible, then visit them to Jail and told them how much they had to pay to get a reduced sentence. Anyway, after he was convicted he turned over his US passport as part of the bond during the time of his appeal of the conviction, he then drive to Toronto Canada and took a flight to Slovenian, where his grandparents had been born. As a descendant of Native Slovenes he was automatically a Citizen of Slovenia.

Israel has a similar rule, all people or Jewish descent are Citizens of Israel, thus there is no need for a US Passport for Pollard to enter Israel. Canada still does NOT require a Passport for an American Citizen to enter Canada, but it is require to go from Canada to the US. Thus all Pollard would need is some sort of Government issued ID, and his birth Certificate to enter Canada.

Yes, due to 9/11 and subsequent legislation it is a lot harder then it was in the early 1990, but it is still possible to LEAVE the US without a Passport.

I lived in D.C. in the eighties in the same building as this guy and his wife, Anne Henderson. Both were whack jobs. She seemed to be crying all the times I saw her and he was just brusk to the point of rude. They had tin foil on all the windows of their unit. When he was busted the FBI et al searched our apartments because Ms. Henderson told them she put his stuff in other units. Probably the funny thing about the whole affair is that he only made about 50,000 dollars for all his work. Not much money and apparently he did immeasurable damage ..there is a reason he was held this long.
