Democratic Senator Carper pledges support for Iran nuclear deal

Source: Reuters

U.S. Senator Tom Carper, a Democrat from Delaware, said on Friday that he will support the nuclear deal with Iran.

"This is a good deal for America and our allies, including Israel, one of our closest allies. And, oh yes. It beats the likely alternative – war with Iran – hands down," Carper wrote in an opinion piece published in The News Journal of Delaware on Friday.

2. That's a big win there

Not to get greedy, but we could have a total of 5 Democratic defections (there are 2 so far) and that would make the vote 59Y-41N, meaning the resolution of disapproval wouldn't even clear cloture at all, and wouldn't pass.

Although I am philosophically opposed to fillibusters.

3. Not really even a filibuster since Congress with Obama agreed to this exact procedure three months ago.

Isn't every Republican voting against this? There are wha, 53 or 54 Republicans out of 100? The math doesn't add up to me.

5. The reason is that this never needed approval, but a bill passed that said if a disaproval

resolution passed, Obama could not relax sanctions. (In the original bills the president had the right to suspend them).

Therefore to derail the agreement they need to first pass that resolution - where they need 60 Senators and at least 50% of the House. Then if that happens, the President will veto it -- so they then need 2/3 of both houses. So, if we have 34 Senators -- the deal stands.

7. The Republicans will pass a bill disapproving of the deal. Obama will veto it

Then, the Republicans will try to override the veto. Only the veto override will kill the deal. The Congress already voted to greenlight the deal pending explicit disapproval. So, all Obama needs is 1/3 +1 to prevent a veto override.

both of my senators owe us Delawaeans after TPP. My guess is Biden talked them into that especially Coons who is the more liberal of my two senators.
