3 convicted in anti-government militia plot receive 12 years

Updated 9:54 pm, Friday, August 28, 2015

ROME, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say three North Georgia men have been sentenced to prison in an anti-government militia plot.

The U.S. Attorney's office said in a news release Friday that Brian Cannon, Terry Peace and Cory Williamson were sentenced to 12 years each in prison for conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction.

U.S. Attorney John Horn said Peace wanted the pipe bombs designed for "maximum fragmentation."

. . .

FBI officials have said Peace, Williamson and Cannon participated in online chats about executing a militia operation against the government. Authorities say the chat was being monitored by federal agents, and the men spoke with a confidential informant who offered them 12 pipe bombs and two grenades.

2. While I have no objections to locking these asses up, no "weapon of mass destruction" was involved.

One can not make a WMD pipe bomb. One can certainly kill scores of people with a pipe bomb, but the term "Weapon of Mass Destruction" used to be reserved for "unconventional" weapons, nuclear, biological, chemical.

This case does not even involve an actual weapon of any sort at all, just online chatting about them.

In this age where news has to be sensationalized to feed the 24x7 news cycle, everything gets supersized. One has to fear everything. These were some asshole idiots jabbering about pipe bombs which, if they actually existed, probably would have been made with black powder, so available for around 1000 years.

How have we gotten to this point where an idiot with a rifle on a highway is a "sniper" and three morons on a computer conspire to use weapons of mass destruction?

3. Is it just my articles, or are you taking kicks at other articles this morning?

I think most DU'ers post material in good faith, and believe them to be worthwhile or they wouldn't waste their time.

4. Nothing personal, I'm objecting to the media's choice of phrasing.

If you feel that I'm making a comment about you, I'm not sure how you would arrive at that conclusion. Unless you personally wrote the media articles about the armchair idiots with the fictional pipebombs, or the asshole shooting cars in Michigan, I haven't even mentioned you.

I have no issues with the stories, just the way they are written. I would have commented the same regardless who posted the story, so you can relax, it's not about you.

6. WMDs aren't limited to CBRN.

Pipe bombs and conventional truck bombs are WMDs if they possess a certain amount of explosive power.

7. There's a huge difference between a pipe bomb and a truck bomb.

If one fills the back of a truck with ANFO, we have seen that it can take a building down. Probably can include that as a WMD.

But that is vastly different than a foot of one inch pipe filled with black powder.
