Fox probing claims 'Maze Runner' cast took artifacts

By RUSSELL CONTRERAS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Representatives from 20th Century Fox are trying to determine if actors took American Indian artifacts while filming "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" at a private New Mexico ranch.

Diamond Tail Ranch manager Roch Hart told The Associated Press that following comments by the film's star, Dylan O'Brien, the studio is investigating claims the cast took artifacts and will seek to return any stolen items.

"They want to make it right," Hart said. "Right now, we don't know if anything was removed, but we are taking the claims very seriously."

Chris Petrikin, a spokesman for 20th Century Fox, confirmed Tuesday that the studio was looking the matter.

A manager of a New Mexico ranch says 20th Century Fox representatives are trying to determine if actors took American Indian artifacts while filming "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials." Actor O'Brien said last month on "Live with Kelly and Michael" that cast members took artifacts from private ranch north of Albuquerque, despite warnings not to take any items like rocks or "skulls." Confusing, Were these stored artifacts that were stolen from storage, or laying out in the open artifacts somehow catalogued and a resulting inventory found them missing, or just artifacts laying out but never seen before ?

On acreage I own I have loads of pottery shards, arrowheads etc. I have found over the years, but would not know if a neighbor came on the property and removed some I was unaware of. In a recent home construction on 1 of my acres we found a 3/4 intact dirt kiln with shards of an almost complete pot. I live in what was ancient Anasazi areas a few miles from the Aztec Ruins so artifact finds are commonplace. Hopefully the missing artifacts were not stolen, but just picked up out in the open with the staff not really knowing what they found.

Obviously a no-no from private property without permission. But of course proving it will be difficult unless people fess up. When people pick up stuff it is a problem because some of the archeological value is lost when objects are moved from a site without recording exactly where they were found.
