Debate heats up over crafting state policy on transgender students' participation in high school spo

LINCOLN — Debate over establishing a state policy on transgender students participating in high school activities is heating up, with four parochial schools backing the current policy, and the ACLU of Nebraska saying that would be a mistake.

Omaha Concordia, Lincoln Pius X, Norfolk Sacred Heart and North Platte St. Patrick Schools have asked the Nebraska School Activities Association to retain its current policy, which dictates that students participate in sports based on the gender listed on their birth certificate at birth.

At the Thursday meeting of the NSAA’s board, a representative of the Nebraska Catholic Conference urged the board to adopt that proposal and reject those that would base participation on a student’s present gender identity.

“We want a policy that reflects everyone’s safety and dignity,” said Shari Rickert, the policy director and general counsel for the Catholic Conference, which represents the state’s three Catholic bishops.

Every person has a right to their own gender identity. If they can make the team, they can play. Not sure what all the excitement is about.
