Aaron Rodgers upset by 'prejudicial' shout during Lambeau moment of silence

Source: ESPN

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Aaron Rodgers was angered by what he heard Sunday at Lambeau Field during the pregame moment of silence to honor the victims of Friday night's terrorist attacks in Paris.

Rodgers wouldn't reveal exactly what he heard shouted from the stands, but the Green Bay Packers star quarterback took the opportunity to speak out against what he called a "prejudicial ideology" he felt the remark represented.

"I think it's important to do things like [the moment of silence]," Rodgers told ESPN's Bob Holtzman. "We're a connected world -- you know, six degrees of separation.

"I must admit, though, I was very disappointed with whoever the fan was who made a comment that I thought was really inappropriate during the moment of silence. It's that kind of prejudicial ideology that I think puts us in the position that we're in today as a world."

At all times, but especially in precarious times such as these, it's important to acknowledge anyone that doesn't act as a bystander and calls out statements of hatred and bigotry. Good for you Aaron Rodgers.

But after the moment of silence, a fan audibly shouted "Muslims suck" at Lambeau Field.

Northeastern Wisconsin, the only place I have lived where one of my kids was called a kike. I knew some wonderful people there, but Appleton (20 minutes from Green Bay) is home to the headquarters of The John Birch Society. It sometimes shows.

generally votes Republican despite small enclaves of Democrats -blue ares. I had to chuckle when I read your comment as I used to lie in Oshkosh-still have friends in the Valley. Anyway--we used to go to Appleton-the area for fun-parties--mix with the more liberal crowd. Oshkosh, even with its University is very conservative.

north of Green Bay and it is very much a racist area.

Of course there are some decent people here but they don't out shine the others.

Try as I might, I cannot bring myself to hate the Packers. I do hate losing to them of course...but they are a team owned by the people. Gotta love and respect that.

Aaron Rogers is the best QB in the league IMO. I stand with him. He should take off that ugly green uniform though.

One person said something that was not appropriate and some people want to say they expect that from people in Wisconsin, well you have assholes in every state in this country. One person out of a population of 3 million and you expect shows that are not very well informed or educated, who knows he could have come to the game from Michigan that is only 1 hour away, so lighten up and just criticize the person that said this.

Honestly, my hope in posting this was to acknowledge Rodgers and show the importance of denouncing hate speech. After Missouri, we are seeing the type of platform athletes have, and to see it used to denounce hate is very refreshing.

As you said, we don't even know the fan is from Wisconsin. In any group you'll have assholes. In my opinion, the focus of the article should be the positive response of Rodgers.

For better or worse, sports plays an important role in public discourse. Missouri truly showed what power that can bring.

It sounds like someone yells out "Muslims suck!", then someone else yells out "Have some respect!". We aren't all assholes.
