NBC Begins Making Equal Time Offers After Donald Trump’s ‘SNL’ Gig

Source: Variety.com NOVEMBER 19, 2015 | 05:28PM PT

NBC is proposing giving free airtime to campaigns on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 after a number of Republican candidates requested it following Donald Trump’s hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live.”

The network’s proposal is for each of the candidates who requested time to get a 12-minute slot between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday night and 12 minutes during the “Saturday Night Live” time period on Saturday night, according to a source with one of the campaigns, who did not want to be identified because negotiations are ongoing. The equal time arrangement was offered to at least two campaigns, with their time airing on 18 affiliates with a coverage area of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the source said.

Trump hosted “Saturday Night Live” on Nov. 7, but appeared on camera for a total of 12 minutes and five seconds. The source said the reason for the offering of two time slots was to reach an audience that was comparable to the Trump appearance. Campaigns are now mulling over the offer. No final decisions have been made as discussions continue with the campaigns.

A spokeswoman for NBC had no comment. The campaigns of John Kasich, Lindsey Graham, George Pataki, Mike Huckabee and Jim Gilmore have filed equal time requests with the network or one or more of the network affiliates. Typically, equal time is given on stations where campaigns requested equal time, but NBC has been handling the negotiations. Trump’s appearance averaged 9.3 million viewers nationwide, giving “Saturday Night Live” its largest audience since 2013.

Obama reinstating the fairness doctrine and the alleged plot to force Liberals to have equal time in every facet of the media?

the Equal time provisions with the Fairness Doctrine.

Equal time is an FCC requirement that the political candidates (if requested) are given the equivalent time to state their message.

IOW, as Trump was on SNL for the reported 12 minutes, Carson can ask (and he must receive) 12 minutes at the same approximate time slot and potential audience.

This was implemented because electronic media outlets could choose to cover one and only one candidate which could influence the outcome of an election.

Please note that this requirement is not absolute. Exceptions are made for legitimate news stories, on the spot news events and the like.

The Fairness Doctrine, OTOH, was intended to present balanced coverage/points on issues of public importance. For example: a city wants to develop a new highway that cuts through a large swath of neighborhoods. Under the Fairness Doctrine, electronic news outlets were required to present the pro and cons of the issue.

make sense?

doing an entire one-hour show with Ahnie "sexual harassment" Schwartzenegger (sp?) and Maria "I'm going to turn a blind eye to my husband boinking anything in a skirt" Shriver during the recall election in California. No such offer was made to Goveror Grey. I've detested Winfrey ever since.

only needs to "afford equal opportunities to all other such candidates for that office in the use of such broadcasting station". That means it has to be made available but traditionally only if a candidate asks.

Additionally, if programming is considered a "bona fide interview", it is exempted from the Equal Time provisions.

Here is the actual text of the law.

The latest NBC News/SurveyMonkey online poll has Donald Trump back in the lead with 28% support among Republican and independent voters who lean Republican. Meanwhile, Ben Carson seems to be fading. He has lost eight points and is tied with the surging Ted Cruz for second place with 18%.

The only other candidate with double-digit support is Marco Rubio. The Florida senator is supported by 11% of Republican (leaning) voters. Rubio is followed by Jeb Bush with 4%, and by Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina with 3% each.
