Top lawmaker rebutted on climate study accusation

The escalating struggle between an influential House Republican and government scientists over their pivotal study of global warming now turns on accusations that they rushed to publish their findings to advance President Obamas agenda on climate change.
But a spokeswoman for Science, the prestigious peer-reviewed journal that in June published the paper by climate scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said in an interview that their research was subject to a longer, more intensive review than is customary.
This paper went through as rigorous a review as it could have received, said Ginger Pinholster, chief of communications for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which publishes Science. Any suggestion that the review was rushed is baseless and without merit.

The study is widely considered to be a bombshell in the climate change world because it contradicted the notion of a pause in global warming and thus undercut the arguments of global warming skeptics. Among them is Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.), who chairs the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. NOAAs data sets are used by climate scientists to take temperature measurements worldwide.

Ordinarily, if I had anything to say about climate change, I'd put it over in the forum for that topic. When an article contains the words "threatens" and "subpoena," I think that maybe it should go in LBN.

(23,191 posts)I welcome the hearing. He's got zero,zip.zilch,nada. He just doesn't like the scientific facts and like a Repugs really only cares about using ideology to help the rich (Kochs, Bushes, etc.) make more money.

The science has not been in doubt for 25 years now....longer really. Greenhouse gases trap radiation and contribute to warming effects. There is nothing new about any of it except for the degree of alarm that should be felt by anyone not breathing through their mouth while drooling on a photo of Carson or Trump.
I weep for the future of this planet and on many occasions have apologized to them for their plight. I do so once more now.
