Donald Trump on waterboarding: 'Even if it doesn't work they deserve it'

Source: The Guardian

Donald Trump touted the benefits of waterboarding in a campaign rally on Monday night, telling a crowd that “you bet your ass” he would bring it back into use.

Addressing thousands of people in Columbus, Ohio, the Republican frontrunner praised waterboarding, an interrogation method that has been called torture. “I would approve more than that,” he said.

Trump told supporters: “Would I approve waterboarding? You bet your ass I would. In a heartbeat. I would approve more than that. It works.”

The Republican frontrunner then added “… and if it doesn’t work, they deserve it anyway for what they do to us”.

Here is a person running for government and cheered on by a crowd, publicly admitting that torture of people is a part of their punishment. Keep in mind, that punishment as admitted by them is upon accusation and not after a public trial normally demanded by them because specifically you can not trust government.
So you now have public executions when ever citizens disrespect police, torture as punishment upon accusation of commuting a crime and I suppose no trial necessary once the victim confesses to a crime they have been told they committed and until they confess they are tortured and well, sometimes they die of natural causes for failure to confess whilst being tortured.
Trump is advocating an end to innocent until proven guilty and no right to a trial prior to be punished based upon nothing but accusation by government.
In quite a few countries Trump would be under arrest for advocating criminal activities, instigating violence and hate speech.

When he starts the Donald Trump Campaign for Political Purity of America, with 'Vacation spots' in Reeducation camps for the selected, with 24/7 Fox news piped into every room loudly, nourishing Gruel, hard work healthily outside and much much more.

And with Prizes for all Selectors of the 'Guests', Double the prize if you inform(select) on family.

This isn't "crazy" or "extreme" in relation to the zeitgeist of the American masses. If you hear what the normal folk, the salt of the earth, the common man....you know, morons (thanks Gene) say when they get together for anything other than "bring a vegan nut-free gluten-free dish to share in our potluck to raise money for distressed Kazakh lacemakers" type meetings, you'd hear that all Trump is doing is playing the suckers in true Barnum fashion, based on the limited lizard brain scope that it's oh-so-politically-incorrect to mention is all most people rely on, or have the mental capacity to handle. It's why his trashy faux-Louis XVI decor screams wealth and taste and his blustering says alpha male to the same mouth-breathing audience.

He's not inciting oe causing or even exacerbating this idiocy. He's giving it a microphone. In this day of everyone is equal and IQ means nothing and it's rude to correct grammar mistakes because that's so prescriptive, somebody needs to stand up and say that a lot of people are flat out uninformed, mentally incurious, and intellectually incapable of nuanced or lateral thinking. And no they are not all Republican, or all white, or all suburban, or all male, or all fat. They are legion, and everywhere, and our education system has for decades stressed that they should be considered equally valuable mentally as any PhD or polymath. We don't pretend that the huge number of people who will never break a 6 second 40yd or be able to throw a football more than 20 yds or grow over 6' tall are equally valuable as NFL players, but we've told two or three generations of shambling buffoons who think that tossing three heads in a row increases the probability that the next one will be tails that their brains and intellects are just "different, but just as good" when compared to a genius.

And what has that wrought? Almost an entire electorate, left and right, who thinks they, or the guy on the bar stool next to them, has just as much insight into global trade as Krugman and just as worthy opinions on the Middle East as a career foreign service analyst and that they can see through the "ivory tower bullshit". And they have decided that if uneducated pig-ignorant goobers like themselves all think that terrorists (aka brown skinned folks except Vishal at the help desk) should be thumbscrewed until they larn' not to mess with the big dawg US of A then so should the politicians. And lo, one such, not coincidentally a lifetime huckster, suddenly appears.

There have always beewn dull, mentally vapid people in huge numbers. But we, as in much of the west, only got dull mentally vapid leadership when we persuaded those dull mentally vapid voters that they were something else. Look around countries which have strenuous, intellectually streamed and performance-segregated education systems. Any of them have a GWB just gone and a Trump just pending?

There are huge incurious reactionary masses in Korea, or Singapore, or Germany etc. True indeed. However those countries generally haven't spent three generations telling those masses that they are "smart" and that "book learning is just one kind of intellect" and that "common sense" (which is typically neither) is all they need to reach valid conclusions in complex inductive reasoning. What they get in return is knuckle-dragging hordes who at least defer to their respective pointy headed intellectuals in such situations. The Scottish independence vote is an example. All the beer-fueled sound and fury in the council estates screamed devolution, but enough people trusted those econ PhD's who said, in paraphrase, "are you nuts? Have you seen the tax outflows compared to government spending?" and all was well. How do you think that vote would go in Texas today?

mustaches.

On a more serious note, sane Americans everywhere have to be looking at the rise of this guy with horror.

I saw a comic a few months ago on here that had a young couple sitting on a couch watching TV. The first panel was captioned, 'What Republicans think Democrats do when watching the GOP debate.' In this panel the couple were sitting seriously side by side, obviously listening.

The second caption read, 'What Dems ACTUALLY do when watching the GOP debate,' and in this panel, the couple were laughing uproariously.

Now, my son and I watched the first GOP debate and did the laughing...

But I'm not laughing now. Nor is he. Trump scares the shit out of me because it would be SO easy for him to take control of this country and turn it into a Fourth Reich. My son has a more positive view - he thinks people will stand up and say 'enough' to Trump. But then he hasn't lived quite as long as I have, nor seen how utterly brutal we can be to one another. This guy and his Nazi followers are more dangerous to civilization than words can even say.
