Nuclear generator shuts down I-8 in El Cajon

Source: KGTV TV News

A truck hauling a nuclear generator brought down power lines over the Interstate 8 freeway in El Cajon for several hours Wednesday morning.

Just before 2 a.m. the truck was headed east on I-8, just west of Greenfield Drive, when the nuclear generator it was transporting struck the power lines and brought them down over the freeway.

A Sig Alert was issued and the eastbound lanes were shut down. Traffic was being diverted at 2nd Street.

As of 4:50 a.m., I-8 east was still closed. SDG&E crews were on scene working to fix the downed lines.

This was a generator for the ITER fusion project in Europe.
It's an oversized load and snagged the power lines.

Truck carrying oversize load downs power lines
POSTED 5:01 AM, NOVEMBER 25, 2015, BY BRODIE HART, UPDATED AT 06:03AM, NOVEMBER 25, 2015

EL CAJON, Calif. – Power was out in areas of El Cajon Wednesday morning after a truck carrying a large device for the U.S. Department of Energy clipped power lines, the California Highway Patrol said.

The truck was heading east on Interstate-8 at Greenfield Drive just after 1 a.m. when its load hit the power lines. Around 3,100 SDG&E customers were without power, though power was restored to most customers a short time later.

The truck was transporting a piece of equipment for the U.S. Department of Energy, according to a label on the side of the cargo. The writing identified the object as an “ITER”, which possibly stands for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.

The label also identified the company for whom the cargo was being moved as Babcok Noell/Bilfinger, which specializes in “nuclear service, nuclear technology, magnet technology and environmental technology” according to their website. The device did not appear to be damaged. It was unclear where it was being transported and was unclear exactly what the device was.

The headline from the OP is a click bait headline.

Journalism, or what passes for it, really sucks today.

Those were the only two articles I could find,
so I felt it was the better headline.

during a busy time of travel for many people.

The story would have the same impact to many if it had been a mobile home that had done the damage.

Big rig topples power lines over I-8 east

High-profile vehicles being diverted off at Second Street

By Karen Kucher | 6:54 a.m. Nov. 25, 2015 | Updated, 6:57 a.m.

EL CAJON — A big rig truck driving on eastbound Interstate 8 in El Cajon hit and knocked over power lines early Wednesday, prompting a partial freeway closure that could last for hours.

The truck hit power lines near Second Street around 1:19 a.m., initially forcing both eastbound lanes to be closed before officers began diverting only high-profile vehicles off the road, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr..

"Luckily it's not the westbound side for the morning," CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said. "It looks like this will be a long-term thing. We will see how it affects the biggest traveling day of the year, if it lasts into the afternoon."

TV news footage shot at the collision site showed a big rig with a label on its side indicating it was carrying equipment for the U.S. Department of Energy that may be an experimental nuclear generator.

"I have no idea what it is carrying," Doerr said.
