Russia bombs aid convoy amid airspace dispute, Turkey says
Source: News.az
Russian warplanes bombed a Turkish truck convoy at the Syrian border on Wednesday amid increasing tensions between the two countries over Turkey's downing of a Russian jet.
Video from Doğan News Agency showed the aftermath of the strikes near Azaz, a Syrian border town, Grasswire reports.
Turkish media said the trucks belonged to IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, an Istanbul-based humanitarian organization with connections to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. IHH said it has teams in the area but did not own the trucks.
The state-run Anadolu News Agency blamed Russia for the attack and said the trucks were taking supplies to refugees.
Seven people were killed and ten others injured in the air strike, Daily Sabah reported.

Breaking: 2nd convoy struck
According to Putin TV (RT), it's still a "mystery" who bombed the convoy

(1,178 posts)Do you have any support for your statement? IHH is anything but a peaceful humanitarian organization. This was the group on the Mavi Marmara who attacked the Israeli soldiers and were killed. There have also been reports linking IHH to ISIS arms shipments and members of IHH have been arrested for having links to Al Qaeda. They definitely have a political and military component to their charitable activities. That being said, it is still always best to have proof, hence my question.

(1,561 posts)The Turks are supplying the "rebels" that the Russians are fighting. Humanitarian aid my ass. Who do you think is buying the Syrian oil that is financing ISIS? Anything the Turkish say is suspect.

(10,056 posts)Not that the Russians are blameless in all this, but what did that fuckwit Erdogen think was going to happen?
Erdogen was unbelievably naive to think that the could shoot a Russian jet down with no consequences.
His foolishness just cost a ton of people their lives. He has as much blood on his hands as Putin in this.

(2,301 posts)But it's not as if Putin wasn't bombing civilian and non-civilian targets in this area before the shoot-down: Turkey summons Russian envoy over bombing of Turkmens in Syria: PM. What is a reaction to what in this giant mess is a muddle.
blackspade
(10,056 posts)And bombing non-ISIS targets to further that goal.
But Erdogan's actions are fucking idiotic even if the goal is to further consolidate is fundamentalist party's power by generating an external enemy worthy of the name, or to generate a wider conflict that will consolidate his power at home.... or both.
He is like a lot of fundies, short sighted with no concept of consequences.

(3,982 posts)There is a reason that Russia has been bombing that border. You have to stop the supplies of mercenaries, weapons, and the illegal trade. The majority of foreign ISIS mercenaries have been aided that way and no doubt those lovely "Turkmen" have been making a ton of money aiding it.
Why wouldn't any country wanting to stop ISIS cut off the support moving through the north? It doesn't make sense not to do so.

(2,301 posts)When we bomb a hospital and do damage control, there's a healthy criticism and skepticism about official accounts and the minor inconsistencies there in. When Russia bombs a hospital, their official account is something like, "what hospital? and even if we did, they were ISIS anyways...", and bunch of people on DU lap that shit up.
uhnope

(120 posts)By an orginisation that knew nothing about the convoy. Im calling bullshit on this one
"Footage released online by the Istanbul-based Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) shows plumes of smoke from the burning trucks and people running about in panic. At least 20 trucks were engulfed in flames".
"The mission, however, wasnt sponsored or organized by the IHH, the group said. No organization has as yet confirmed that the convoy belonged to them".

(13,184 posts)I guess Turkey might want to think twice about sending anything across the Syrian border. Once they cross the border, it's not Turkey's country. It is Syria, and the Russians are there to help the government in Damascus. They will have an increasingly small tolerance for any more Turkish shenanigans.

Putin's Jets bomb anything that moves on the ground.

(13,508 posts)> Putin's Jets bomb anything that moves on the ground.
Face it: Erdogan's support for ISIS involves tankers moving from Syria to Turkey
and trucks moving from Turkey to Syria hence either are legitimate targets.

(112 posts)For all they know, these trucks could have been sending supplies to rebels. Turkey and Russia are basically no longer communicating with each other.
