Turkey's president voices "sadness" over downing of Russian jet on Syria border, saying he wishes it had not happened.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced "sadness" on Saturday over the downing of a Russian fighter jet by Turkish forces, saying he wished it had not happened.
Addressing supporters, Erdogan again defended Turkey's action and criticised Russia for its moves in Syria before expressing his regrets.
"We wish it hadn't happened, but it happened. I hope something like this doesn't happen again," Erdogan said.
The Turkish president added that both sides should approach the issue in a more positive way, and renewed a call for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the UN's climate change conference in Paris that starts on Monday.

(2,352 posts)and I doubt that it will be sufficient for President Putin, whose approval ratings in Russia are now higher than ever:
According to a report at Russia Insider (Nov. 1st), something we thought would be nigh impossible has just happened Vladimir Putins approval rating in Russia has soared to yet another all time high:
Russian President Vladimir Putins approval rating has reached historical maximum and hit almost 90%, according to a poll conducted by Russian Public Opinion Research Center (WCIOM). Putins approval rating has broken a new record reaching 89.9%. The last record was registered in June 2015 89.1%
According to WCIOM, such high rating of approval of the Russian president is registered, first of all, in connection with events in Syria, Russian aviations airstrikes at terrorist positions. Sociologists reminded that the Russian presidents rating has remained higher than 80% for the last two years. Putins rating started growing in spring 2014 against the backdrop of Russias reunification with Crimea and Sevastopol. In March 2014, the rating stood at 76.2% on average, in April at 82.2%, and in May at 86.2%, WCIOM said.
