Upstate New York man arrested in fatal shooting of 7-month-old boy

Rome Police Department

An upstate man arrested Sunday after he fatally shot a 7-month-old boy claims the shotgun discharged accidentally when he tried to stand up, cops say.

Rome police say 18-year-old Henry Bartle faces a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

Authorities say Bartle was in his apartment on Saturday with his girlfriend, who’s the baby’s mother, and another man, and was cleaning the 12-gauge shotgun in the living room. Police say he then loaded the gun and had it in his lap pointing in the direction of the child.

The baby was struck in the upper body when the gun went off.

I grew up rural and you cleaned firearms in the garage. My neighbor cleaned his outside. Then you loaded them when you went hunting or if you heard a bump in the night and felt the need for a firearm. Pump shotguns load fast alternately it takes a second to put a magazine into a semi auto. But no, numb nuts the man-child had to play with his gun in the frigging house. No wonder he's a teenage parent.

a lot of companions around here. When life ends with high school and no good jobs at hand, young people do foolish things.

The NRA could have done society some service by being more aggressive about this than sowing fear and boosting gun sales.

An NRA approved safety course required before taking delivery of a gun. Every time.

A colleague of mine (ex-special forces type) shot himself through the hand a few weeks ago. I was amazed. I figured he would be the last person to have such an accident.

There is no doubt in my mind that the NRA have the expert knowledge. So why then are there accidents like this?
