SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Homicides detectives were investigating Tuesday after authorities found two children dead inside a commercial storage unit in Northern California.
Autopsies were planned Wednesday for the 3-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy, whose names were not released. No charges have been filed in their deaths.
The investigation also led to a starved and injured 9-year-old girl, the Plumas County Sheriff's Office said. She was taken to a hospital.
It began with a call about a possible child abuse case in the small town of Quincy, about 220 miles northeast of San Francisco.

(15,882 posts)aren't spending so much on creating opportunities for people to live better and safer lives.
We could just blame it on a teenage kid and his mom because rents are too high, and food thus becomes a luxury for people supporting the upper class.
That's easier, and lets everyone else off the hook for governing to improve the lives of their donors while leaving tens of millions of working poor and people living in poverty to hang.

(61,703 posts)I agree that we need a better safety net, but still, some people are just evil.
Lots of people survive in poverty without torturing and murdering children.

(15,882 posts)in poverty. So it seems choices that shuffle money from working people to the wealthy are policies that insure the ones left out will hurt more.
Because I am pretty sure evil is evenly distributed across the classes.
But they had to learn somewhere. Maybe it started before this...no, wait, that leaves us with responsibility.
I have it. Let's blame it on mental illness. Then no one is at fault.
Or maybe evil just appeared out of nowhere. Sure it did.

(15,882 posts)see the "meth, meth, meth, etc".
Translation: sounds more like an excuse for government - that's us - policy which favors the privileged class.
The jobs which used to be here have been sold, the costs of educating our young for the nation's future have been shifted to the least likely to be able to do it, the students themselves. We pretend to an economy which is largely debt, and that we have employment when so many fewer are working.
And we support the wealthy with hundreds of billions of dollars, while our really destitute get barely enough food stamps to get through all 20 days of a month.
I am sure someone will have pictures of all the meth labs they have busted in Goldman Sachs and their employee's neighborhoods, where much of the money people work for is going. Make me sound like a loon.
Oh well. I prefer sounding like that to some of the alternatives I am hearing.

(60,212 posts)There's another case locally about a child who was beaten and forced to eat dog food and generally abused but you don't read about it in the paper because the family is wealthy.
Poverty is no excuse, and wealth is no immunization.

(17,196 posts)Tami Joy Huntsman, 39, and her 17-year-old boyfriend, Gonzalo Curiel, are behind bars and facing charges of felony child abuse, torture, and mayhem, after the gruesome discovery in Redding, California, on Monday night. The bodies were stuffed inside plastic tote containers and then hidden in the storage unit. Police were led to the remains after they discovered a 'severely abused' nine-year-old girl at an apartment Huntsman was taken. The youngster was taken into surgery suffering multiple injuries. Sheriff Greg Hagwood said she weighed about 40 pounds, had broken bones in her shoulder, broken fingers, a dislocated jaw, and teeth that were missing or loose.

(160,621 posts)Sheriff: Abused girl led to discovery of 2 kids' bodies in storage locker
UPDATED 5:29 PM PST Dec 15, 2015
. . .
When Huntsman, Curiel, and the young children moved from Salinas to a friend's house in Quincy, Calif., Plumas County Child Protective Services alerted the sheriff because agents found a tortured 9-year-old girl. The girl was starving and dying.
. . .
Social services had investigated Huntsman and her family within the last year for general neglect, said Elliott Robinson, director of social services for Monterey County. Robinson's Monterey County office filed death reports for the two children, indicating that the kids may have died in Salinas. Redding is about 300 miles north of Salinas, and 140 miles northwest of Quincy.
The two homicide victims and the abused 9-year-old girl were siblings. Friends said Huntsman was caring for the children who were slain because their mother died after she was struck by a car while walking, and the father gave up custody.
. . .
Tami Huntsman and her brother, Wayne Huntsman, grew up in Santa Cruz. Wayne Huntsman is currently in prison and accused of intentionally igniting a massive wildfire in a national forest. The King Fire scorched 120 square miles and 12 homes before firefighters contained it last fall. The King Fire cost $5 million a day to fight, fire officials said.

(18,870 posts)I think they have found about 5 kids just this last year here in KC that were locked in closets or chained in the basement basically starved and tortured. They just arrested a man and his wife last week for the death of a 7 year old son whose body was fed to their pigs.
I wonder how many of them are really out there that no one knows about.
If family members haven't seen a child for a while they need to call in and have it checked out. A lot of the time neighbors don't even know the kids exist but you can be sure family members do.
