Bernie Sanders hits back after being called a ‘wacko’ by Donald Trump
Source: W Post
By John Wagner
Hours after being called a wacko by Donald Trump, Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders fired back Monday at the Republican front-runner, saying he was pushing pathetic policies designed to benefit billionaires such as himself at the expense of misguided working-class voters who support him.
Sanders and Trump have been engaged in an escalating war of words since Sunday, when the Vermont senator asserted during an appearance on Face the Nation that he is better-positioned than Trump to represent the economic interests of some the real estate moguls followers.
Trump opposes raising the minimum wage and supports some tax cuts for higher-income earners, positions that Sanders argued during the CBS program are contrary to the interests of Trumps lower- and middle-class supporters. Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, has made that argument before, but it gained greater prominence with the Sunday show exposure.
On Monday morning, Trump took to Twitter to argue that if anyone is going to poach another candidates supporters, its him.

(3,457 posts)He should start in on Trump's short fingers and fake hair for maximum press interest.

(30,817 posts)But you're right. All the attention is on Trump, so the way for him to actually get coverage is to engage with Trump.

(1,926 posts)Giving the rich tax cuts while making poor families pay more is getting harder and harder to sell.
So is deregulating the Wall Street Pigs.
So is "free trade".
Go Getem Bernie.
Don't do personal on Trump, even though it would be a full time job.
Go economics, and let's see if Trump can sell his trickle up policies, just like the good old days.

(7,908 posts)on Trump soon. Pataki is very conservative, but in the old school sense of the term. He has already voiced string opposition to Trump. Now that Pataki has officially withdrawn, he can take the rhetorical gloves off.

(23,569 posts)I see your point. It is a common practice in Hollywood too....publicity is just that....Bernie gets a chance to wedge in his talking points in response, ultimately turning the subject to his favor.

(1,859 posts)Plus it gives them publicity. They should continue doing it intelligently with facts and solutions, and not at Trumps level of personal attacks. I don't think Bernie or Hillary have anything to fear in going against Trump - just like Hillary didn't when being interrogated by RW congress over Bengahzi. She made them look bad by sticking to intelligent answers. Bernie does the same.

LOVE the bit where the Trump guy says "I would like to the answer the last part of his question first.." and then lets it hang for a second as we all KNOW he is about to say ANYTHING.

I would love to be wrong, but I just don't have much faith in that wing of the electorate.

(7,908 posts)re-focus a slice of Trump's supporters from the non-essential (race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation) to the essential (relationship to the means of production). Standard Marxist approach to the critique of racism, sexism and other class-divisive wedges. What is fascinating is seeing whether Sanders' attempt will work.
Of course, the prospect of a one-party state under fascist leadership makes this far more than an academic matter. The stakes cannot be higher.

(301 posts)It's a very interesting election cycle regardless of where you stand. Also a dangerous one.
Having spent a lot of my life among the kind of arch conservatives that are now supporting Trump, I think it's crazy to imagine them going over to an east coast jewish democrat that describes himself as a socialist. They've long since shown that identity politics, jingoistic patriotism and demagoguery are more important than rational policy that serves their self interest.
But, as my wife will gladly tell you, I've been wrong before.

(38 posts)Sorry to once again refer to the well thought out principles of Nazi propaganda developed by Hitler and Goebbels. You don't refer to your opponents by name, you assign them a derogatory nickname. The Repubs have used this technique for many years. Rush used " The screamer" for Howard Dean back in 2004, now Trump is using SLUT and Wacko, and he's just getting started.

(2,978 posts)another fave. But our candidates have a tendency to use more complex imagery than the average 4th-grade-thinking-level of the Trump voter can handle, so maybe we've got to settle for "Little Weenie" or "Cootie Face" or something.
