PUTIN AND KISSINGER TO MEET FOR 'FRIENDLY DIALOGUE'

Source: Newsweek

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Moscow, as the two have apparently kept in close touch through the years, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

German-born Kissinger served as national security advisor and later as secretary of state in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He has since published numerous books on political science and has been repeatedly welcomed to the White House to discuss politics with subsequent presidents and secretaries of state. He has also met with Putin on a number of occasions and was critical of the U.S.’s treatment of Russia during the Ukraine crisis.

Peskov said in his daily press brief that the two would meet on Wednesday as part of a “longstanding friendly dialogue,” state news agency RIA Novosti reports.

Either way, disturbing in the extreme, to have a war criminal negotiating with a fellow war criminal.

he's okay. Not to mention, an interesting question is whether he will be debriefed by the State Department for any thing Putin tells him that could be useful.

Remember in 2006 how angry the Republicans were that John Kerry and Chris Dodd, both on the SFRC went to Syria? In fact, before they left, they got a list of questioned from the Rice state department - because they asked if there was anything they could ask. This was a good thing to do, because they as Senators - and especially Senators in the opposition could ask questions which Assad could not misinterpret as US policy. It came to nothing, but it's always good to get input. Obviously even things directly told to a current SoS are tested before trusted, but dialogue is good

I don't think Kissinger is in a position to hurt ... though things are in bad enough shape, may Kissinger could get Putin to offer something on either Ukraine or Syria. I tend to doubt it.

from 2014

...

Putin should come to realize that, whatever his grievances, a policy of military impositions would produce another Cold War. For its part, the United States needs to avoid treating Russia as an aberrant to be patiently taught rules of conduct established by Washington. Putin is a serious strategist — on the premises of Russian history. Understanding U.S. values and psychology are not his strong suits. Nor has understanding Russian history and psychology been a strong point of U.S. policymakers.

Today friendly dialogue between Putin and Kissinger will continue in Moscow," Peskov said, adding that they have long-lasting relations and always keep in touch. "Putin praises this opportunity to discuss current issues of foreign policy and opinion exchange on the prospects for further developments," Peskov said.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, on Wednesday Putin will hold talks with Horst Seehofer, the prime minister of the German federal land of Bavaria. "It is an important meeting to continue the dialogue with German partners paying special attention to trade and economic relations," he said, adding that despite all the restrictions and a number of downfalls in Moscow-Berlin ties "economic relations are of great importance for Russia and other foreign trade partners of Germany."
