Only Known US Wild Jaguar Caught On Camera
Source: SKYNEWS
The only known wild jaguar in the United States has been caught on camera roaming parts of an Arizona mountain range.
The big cat, nicknamed El Jefe - Spanish for The Boss - has been living in the Santa Rica Mountains just north of the Mexican border, for over three years, the Center for Biological Diversity believes.
The seven-year-old animal is one of only four or five jaguars seen in the US in the last 20 years.
Jaguars, which are regarded as "near threatened" in the wild in South and Central America, were at one time common in the southwest United States but were hunted to near extinction by the 1960s.

The big cat, dubbed El Jefe, is believed to be wandering Arizona's Santa Rica Mountains on his own.
The video is at the story link. What a beautiful big cat, so sad he wanders the Arizona mountains alone. Extinction sucks.

(1,263 posts)the Santa Rita Mountains are where the Canadian company Rosemont Copper is pushing to get approval of a giant open-pit copper mine with tailings piles filling up whole valleys, with possibility of contaminating Tucson's watersheds and aquifers forever. I sure wish Congressman Grijalva could pull some strings and get the place declared a wilderness area.
For more info see this Wikipedia entry on Rosemont Copper and Save the Scenic Santa Ritas, the organization dedicated to protecting the range.
I don't think this cat would want to stick around once the mining operation were to begin. I sure wouldn't want to.

Is this one truly wild?
Anyway, nice looking kitty.

(16,296 posts)Bubba, after swilling down a few beers, is climbing into his overpowered camo painted truck and whistling to his hunting dogs, Blaze and Growler, who excitedly jump into the bed of the truck. He drives down the dirt road to the next trailer park where he picks up his friend, Donny, who shoves several ammo boxes into the cab along with 2 high-powered rifles with scopes.
JAGUAR SEASON --- Gonna get that there cat
Rather stupid, IMHO, to shout out where it's at and how rare it is . Sort of like tempting the idiots to shoot it.
