Teachers Union: District Barred Inspectors From Detroit Schools
Source: CBS Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) The Detroit teachers union is taking legal action in an effort to clean-up what they say are dirty and dangerous conditions in schools.
The Detroit Federation of Teachers has filed an emergency motion in Third Circuit Court asking a judge to allow nationally recognized industrial hygienists into nine of the citys schools to investigate any possible health problems.
DFT attorney Bob Fetter says the inspectors, who came from New York City, Washington, D.C., and Connecticut at the unions request, are experts trained to look at things like lead paint and mold.
The union also wants them to check for any possible symptoms in students.

(4,033 posts)I taught in a Baltimore High School for one year. The AC unit had been broken for years, if the outside air temperature reached 90 degrees by 11 am, school was dismissed.
When the heat came on in late autumn, the mold was terrible, I am allergic to mold and my symptoms are all upper respiratory, I sounded like I had a cold for 4 months.
The mice that ran through the rooms even on the 3rd floor was terrible. It was a miserable environment. But I raised the proficiency rate on the Maryland state assessments by 28% over the prior year. That's all they want. Screw the environment.
