Condoleezza Rice Aides, Colin Powell Also Got Classified Info on Personal Emails
Source: NBC News
State Department officials have determined that classified information was sent to the personal email accounts of former Secretary of State Colin Powell and the senior staff of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, NBC News has learned.
In an interview with NBC News, Powell challenged the conclusion, saying nothing that went to his personal account was secret. Rice did not initially respond to an interview request.
In a letter to Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy dated Feb. 3, State Department Inspector General Steve Linick said that the State Department has determined that 12 emails examined from State's archives contained national security information now classified "Secret" or "Confidential." The letter was read to NBC News.
Two of the messages were sent to Powell's personal account, and 10 were sent to personal accounts of Rice's senior aides, the letter said.

(46,416 posts)They can't put classified material on any account except approved systems--but much depends on the nature of the messages, whether or not anyone lifted material/took off markings, etc. This should be investigated further.

(11,841 posts)because if you'll notice, the article says "...containing information NOW CLASSIFIED". Which means it wasnt classified at the time they received it.
Case closed, right?

(46,416 posts)the only reason this stuff wasn't classified at the time it was generated/sent was because no one ever examined it, being on an outside system. Another aspect--where were these messages stored all these years? In State Dept. archives (which would then be State's fault) or at home or still on accounts/commercial servers somewhere?

(11,841 posts)I think the only reason they're in the news now is because someone at State went and found them or already knew about them. I cant see Powell or Rice calling them up and telling them "Hey, I've got these emails here I think someone needs to take a look"! Especially since so many years have passed.
I think Hillarys biggest issue at this point are the SAP emails.
But I still say nothing will happen to her. At worst, someone else will get some off the wall charge.

(1,884 posts)So it would depend when the law was cinched up. Before Hillary, during Hillary or after Hillary?
That should help settle things

(2,957 posts)There is NO WAY that the mention in private emails of classified info - either current or post-declared as classified - has been solely committed by Mrs. Clinton.
I'd bet a month's pay that if the same search algorithms were applied to all congressmembers' and their staffs' emails, you'd find the same type of classified data leakage.
