Man convicted of fatally beating transients faces sentencing

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A 20-year-old man convicted of beating two homeless men to death with cinder blocks and other objects in New Mexico's largest city faces sentencing Friday on more than a dozen felony charges.

A jury found Alex Rios guilty of killing Alison Gorman and Kee Thompson in 2014. Prosecutors said they would seek the harshest possible sentence for Rios, who was 18 when he and two friends attacked the men as they slept on a mattress in a vacant lot in Albuquerque.

The others, both juveniles at the time, also were charged with killing the men, who had come to Albuquerque from the Navajo Nation to find work, their family members say.

The attack led city officials to establish a task force on Native American homelessness, though prosecutors did not say the victims were targeted because of their race.

So he beat two people to death with blocks and will not face the death penalty.

This shows how unfairly it is meted out. The pro DP people here were telling me two days ago that some new guy that was going to be executed committed horrific crimes and the last guy executed deserved it - the last guy, who happened to be the oldest prisoner on death row(and black) happened to have been convicted with another guy who also got convicted for killing the same people but got a plea deal so wouldn't face death row. In other words a perfect example of one not getting it and the other getting it for the same EXACT crime.

This article is yet another perfect example of how unfairly it is meted out. This guy killed 2 transients with his bare hands. Those dead transients didn't have a lawyer and the money to make sure this guy gets the DP. Most of the guys getting the DP only killed one person. Most of the people who do the same thing end up walking free eventually. Depends on how much money they have for a lawyer and how much the dead person's family has to buy one that will make sure the focus is the DP, as well as donate to the prosecutor.

From this article:
"Rios could be sentenced to up to 15 years each for two second-degree murder convictions. He also was convicted of aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and armed robbery, which have maximum penalties ranging from 18 months to nine years in prison."

This guy will be out again. You can bet it will be reduced to 1/2 while he's in prison. I bet he does 15 total.
