At Least 2 Hurt in Major Crane Collapse in Lower Manhattan: FDNY

Source: NBC News WNBC

At least two people were hurt when a large crane collapsed in Manhattan's busy Financial District Friday morning, fire officials and sources tell NBC 4 New York.
The collapse was reported near Worth and Church streets shortly before 8:30 a.m., fire officials said.
Images from the scene show the crane crashed on a narrow lower Manhattan street, resting atop several smashed cars that were apparently parked.

Following are my notes from the live television coverage on NBC affiiate:

Massive crane crash happened just a short time ago in the financial district. Just announced on TV--one person dead, confirmed.

There is a huge emergency response. The crane goes for several blocks. This are is between
Church and W. Broadway, a very busy area.

Television news just reported a dozen more injuries.

There is live television coverage on the local TV stations. There are so many emergency vehicles with flashing lights.

One hundred thirty-eight firefighters are present at the scene.

The Dept. of Buildings in NYC has tightened up their inspections and operations significantly. These crane injuries have killed as many as 7 people in one accident in the fairly recent past.

There is so much construction in NYC. No citizen should be going about their business and have to risk their life because of it.

This area is very congested, with narrow streets.

On the positive side, those 11 or 12 injured people were checked out and only 3 found to be injured.

Mayor DeBlasio on his way.

and the Maiden Lane collapse.

AMAZED that, at this moment, only 1 person got killed. I think the snow actually helped - the crane fell at 8:30...considering how congested that area is I’m truly gobsmacked.

but not 2. That being said, I would also know which construction companies were involved. Has this guy been working for the same company or has he been going from company to company after these accidents.

I took operator to mean “owner” as opposed to crane driver, but they’ve clarified it in the press (at least some have).
