Virginia school district nixes video on race after criticism

Updated 3:39 pm, Thursday, February 11, 2016

GLEN ALLEN, Va. (AP) — A school district in Virginia has decided not to use a video about race and affirmative action after it made students uncomfortable and drew criticism from parents who called it "white guilt."

The video was shown at Glen Allen High School during two assemblies for Black History Month and depicts several runners on a track, with black runners facing insurmountable obstacles while white runners are unimpeded.

"While we as educators do not object to difficult and constructive conversations about American history and racial discourse past and present, we understand why many people feel this video in particular was not the best way to deliver such an important lesson," Henrico County Superintendent Patrick C. Kinlaw said in a statement Wednesday.

Don Blake's granddaughter attended the assembly. "They are sitting there watching a video that is dividing them up from a racial standpoint. It's a white guilt kind of video," Blake told WWBT (http://bit.ly/1V6TuCF). "I think somebody should be held accountable for this."

"Force that person to stand on that stage and defend that video," said Johnson. "I'm telling you ... I will mop the floor with that person."

I live very near there and if the trends continues will someday be considered to live IN it.

It's a running joke with people I know (initiated by me) that soon Viriginia will just be known as Glen Allen. In the 90's both it and Hanover become THE place for the people, hitting earning stride, to move with their kids, mostly named Carson Reagan or Something Biblical. White flight out of the cities had already happened so this was flight from the flight. A push further west. Real Estate and businesses changed their address listings to Glen Allen. It unofficially tripled in size.

It was just perfect. Everyone had great jobs and the neighborhoods were first owners who were all just alike. New construction everywhere all connected by the oh so perfectly paved roads. Henrico County takes care of their roads themselves thank you, they don't need those state people downtown telling THEM what to do. Oh and talk up the schools (I have no complaints) gotta talk up the schools.

Everyone played soccer and when little Tucker or Emilia wasn't good at that they started playing lacrosse or swam. It was a new way to chase the college scholarship scam and this sports team pictures tend to be very monochromatic.

Then all the talk of just how perfect it was got out. And apartments started getting built. Suddenly all the black middle class didn't move to the eastern part of the county. The perfect little oasis was too connected with those beautifully paved roads and guess who started showing up. Now we are seeing that those run-and-hide communities weren't so good behind closed doors. Not too long ago they played a racist version of some song called "Duck Tales" toward a football eam from not-Glen Allen. Now they show a well researched and produced film about WHITE PRIVILEGE and the anger and victim hood comes out with cries of "White Guilt". Literally I can't find a local story that has the word PRIVILEGE in it, they all say GUILT. And the school board caves because *gasp* it's bad for the schools! THEY WON'T THINK IT'S PERFECT HERE!!!!

That's Glen Allen VA in a nutshell.

Oh and none of them are going to Yale. The pot heads end up at Randolph-Macon not UVa or Tech.

This is why the foreign college students I've been around know more about Amerikun history than their US counter-parts.

a video about the actual ugly racial history of the US would probably be more educational. Slavery, Jim Crow, the lunch counter sit-ins, separate water fountains, are things that actually happened, and it would be hard to argue against teaching kids about them. And on a more contemporary note, why not teach about things like the Eric Garner and Tamil Rice killings?

It's true still in this the 21st century. Two mountains to climb versus One MOLEHILL to climb for success. Nothing is based on equality in this culture when it comes to race.
