Rep. Duncan Hunter vapes during hearing
Source: CNN
On Thursday, he opened his argument to allow the practice on flights by inhaling a load of e-juices.
"So this is called a vaporizer," Hunter said as his neighbor tried (literally) to clear the air. "There's no combustion, there are no carcinogens ... there is no burning, there is nothing noxious about this whatsoever."
The gesture drew some snickers from the gallery, but failed to win the support of Hunter's colleagues on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which was marking up its Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization (AIRR) Act.
Vaping, which is currently forbidden by most major airlines anyway, looks set for a federal restriction.

Loser.
My message to Hunter - Look jerk, I don't care what that stuff is your messing with, I don't feel like breathing it in while on a plane.

I have more issues sitting next to some guy who hasn't showered in a month than someone vaping on a plane. You're "smoking" water vapor flavored.
My e-juice inventory now is blackcurrant, honeydew, pineapple, strawberry cheesecake and berries and cream. When I blow it out, the room smells like the flavor I am smoking.
Same with my hookah, but I am not going to pull out my three foot hookah pipe on a plane.

Their little kid's screaming on the plane is giving me a headache. Make a law outlawing that. I'm sitting next to someone with BO for six hours on a plane. Outlaw that.
Vaping is water vapor. It's WATER!! You're "smoking" steam.

(5,169 posts)Chemicals Tied To 'Popcorn Lung' Disease Are Also Widely Found In Flavored Electronic Cigarettes
Dec 8, 2015 12:00 AM By Ed Cara
The next hit off your flavored electronic cigarette will likely come with a dose of a flavoring compound suspected of causing respiratory problems, according to new research published Tuesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
Scientists from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, building on earlier research, decided to test for the presence of diacetyl and two related chemicals, acetoin and 2,3-pentanedione, in 51 brands of flavored e-cigarettes and refill liquids, finding that more than 90 percent contained one of the three when inhaled. These chemicals have long been used as flavor enhancers, particularly for products meant to taste buttery, like microwave popcorn. And while theyre believed to be perfectly safe to ingest, theres mounting evidence that inhaling diacetyl as factory employees working at popcorn manufacturing plants often do can trigger an incurable and progressive disease called obliterative bronchiolitis (OB), also known as bronchiolitis obliterans or more simply, "Popcorn Lung."
"Recognition of the hazards associated with inhaling flavoring chemicals started with 'Popcorn Lung' over a decade ago," explained lead author and assistant professor of exposure assessment science.Joseph Allen in a statement. "However, diacetyl and other related flavoring chemicals are used in many other flavors beyond butter-flavored popcorn, including fruit flavors, alcohol flavors, and, we learned in our study, candy flavored e-cigarettes."
~ snip ~
In 2000, eight former employees of the Gilster-Mary Lee popcorn plant were found to have come down with OB over a period of several years by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. After a joint investigation in conjunction with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), it was determined that the plants current workers who had more exposure to flavoring vapors were more likely to report worse airway function. Subsequent research, primarily in animals, has since singled out diacetyl inhalation as a leading culprit of worsening lung function, though 2,3-pentanedione is also considered to be potentially harmful.

A plane is an enclosed space. That's literally the only reason I object to vaping on one. If you could crack a window, it'd be fine, but you can't. And there's always one or two vapers that crank that shit to an unbelievable level, to the point they look like Godzilla, and one or two is all it would take in a space that size to make you feel like you were driving across the Pontchartrain bridge at 7 in the morning.
You can't really outlaw screaming kids, BO would be hard to do too, but I'd be down with banning that awful sickly sweet perfume wearing woman that has no sense of smell that I always seem to get stuck beside. If I wanted to smell like I wallowed in privet hedge, I'd have done it before I left the house.

Oh, I have to listen to people burping turds of wisdom every time I enter or leave my office and I find their words disgusting. So, your right to burp turds of wisdom ends if I can hear it. I will complain too.

Pig farms are cool. I grew up downwind of two of them. Chicken farms are disgusting smelling.
4: Want to vape or smoke fine, but do it where the rest of us can just breath without "your" second hand "steam".
Want to carry on a conversation I also find objectionable, fine, do it where the rest of us can just enjoy our lives without "your" vacuous conversation.
IT works both ways. I vape in my home or on the street, but I live in Malaysia and in China where no one cares if you vape or smoke. So long as the smoke isn't blown in my face or done where signs say you can't smoke, I don't care who does what with their bodies.
I don't even care if people mainline heroin in front of me. It's their body.

(50,553 posts)There's a thread on DU about a kid in Canada who was using a high-end e-cig that blew up and burned off a quarter of his face. The serious vapers among our number decided the victim was either using a "sub-ohm" setup wrong or he was running a bad battery.
This is old-school stuff, but in 1992 I tried bringing a computer on an Air Force cargo plane and wound up spending five hours on the phone trying to find out how much lithium was in the clock battery because the government wouldn't let us fly the battery without that information. (We finally removed the battery from the computer and borrowed one from the electronic maintenance platoon of the unit we were working with in Georgia.) If one 1/2AA lithium can down a C-141B cargo plane, I have no doubt an e-cig battery, which is larger, can take out an airliner.

(1,145 posts)and I haven't touched a cigarette since. For many people who have been trying, like I have, to kick their deadly addiction to the combustion of tobacco and the many carcinogenic additives produced by cigarettes, vaping has been a life-altering change for the better. However, I treat vaping the same way I did cigarettes - I vape outside in the designated areas for cigarette smokers.
I would never sit in an airplane and blow literal clouds of dense vapor into the air because it's rude as hell and just like with cigarette smoke, no one wants to breathe in secondhand vapor. If you need to vape, take your ass outside with the smokers!
I'm hoping people's idiocy and rudeness doesn't end up getting vaping overly-restricted or even banned because it has really helped many long-time smokers who've been struggling to quit. I enjoy being able to smell, taste, breathe, and not smelling like cigarettes all the time now and I'd hate to see the few mess it up for the many.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]When I read about the potential chemicals in commercial e-juices, I researched the subject and started making purely organic juice with no unknown ingredients or additives for a couple of friends. Since then, three other friends got interested, started vaping my e-juice and completely quit cigarettes, and another is now seriously considering it.
I fully support vaping as a way of quitting smoking and hope no further restrictions are put on it. Still, it's not right to expect people stuck nearby to put up with even a harmless cloud if they don't want to. Simple courtesy should be the guide - something which escapes the ever-obnoxious Cunningham's grasp.
