North Carolina reveals results of welfare applicant drug tests

Source: Mashable- on Yahoo

North Carolina revealed early results on Tuesday from a round of drug tests given to those applying for or living with the help of welfare.

From the 7,600 recipients and applicants given an initial screening, social workers referred only 2% for drug testing. That amounted to 89 people.

Of those 89, 21 people tested positive for drugs, representing less than 0.3% of the total number of those screened.

Another yyuuuge waste of money.

The previous article said it was costing North Carolina almost $100 per test.

To reduce benefits for 12 people.

enrich Repugs is to drive solar and other renewable energy sources out of business (so the Koch Bros. can provide us fossil-based energy). Also, he wants nuclear power classified as "renewable", so it can qualify for tax breaks and special considerations. Education in NC is crashing-and-burning. The teachers are demoralized and leaving. Enrollment in NC universities in education is in steep decline. Thinking about moving your family here? Don't. We are so gerry-mandered that our only hope is for the SCOTUS to order redistricting.

Of those, 21 tested positive.

The social workers review first - they are only drug testing those with a known drug problem, which is why so many tested positive.

Is it a good use of the social workers' time? That's the question to ask.

The answer is no, it is a waste of time since they subjected all to the screening and then actually tested 89 and all tested were known drug users in the last year. BTW, They should give the ones who tested positive more health services to beat the drugs, not less.

It doesn't say which drugs these people were on. I bet a majority caught only smoked a joint in the last 3 months. Now that's the reason to withhold support

probably not.

I bet you are right about the marijuana, too.

This is at least rational in that they didn't test everyone, thus wasting the public's money.

Then take that money and hand it to the people they tested in this system.
