State police shoot, wound man armed with shotgun at Wal-Mart
Apr 8, 1:14 AM EDT
SHREWSBURY, Pa. (AP) -- A trooper shot and wounded a man armed with a shotgun at a busy Pennsylvania Wal-Mart after the man robbed the pharmacy for prescription drugs, state police said.
State police received a call Thursday night from the Wal-Mart in Shrewsbury, saying the store about 40 miles south of the state capitol of Harrisburg had been robbed.
A trooper who was in the area responded and spotted the suspect as he was leaving the store.
Authorities said the trooper told the man to drop the shotgun. That's when the man raised his weapon.

(196 posts)According to Newsweek the US consumes 80% of the world's opiates and addiction to prescription opiates has skyrocketed in the last 10 years.
I often wonder how many who regularly take prescription opiates needs them for actual pain, are just addicts, or both.

(66,434 posts)We chase them out of the clinic pretty fast.
There are also a lot of people out there in genuine pain, who would be better served with non-opioid treatment. Some insist on nothing else ("Percocet is the only thing that works, man!), and a lot of them consent to efficacious, non-opioid pain treatment, and report a great deal of relief from it.
There is a small percentage of pain patients who can be treated with skilled, careful opioid management, as well as focussed adjunct therapy. But we medical providers will always be accused by the addicts of denying efficacious care purely out of the spite of our evil hearts.
It can be discouraging...

(11,155 posts)with a quick shot by both! You know like the article states.
""The trooper was able to simultaneously push the shotgun barrel away while firing one round. The subject also fired a round as well," Trooper Rob Hicks said.
The trooper's bullet struck the man in the chest."

SHREWSBURY, Pa.A York man is now facing charges after authorities say he attempted to shoot a Pennsylvania State Police trooper during a robbery at the Walmart in Shrewsbury on Thursday night.
Thomas A. Markowski, 57, is charged with criminal attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, robbery, theft by unlawful taking, possession of instruments of a crime, prohibited offensive weapon and recklessly endangering another person.
The incident unfolded shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Walmart located along the 600 block of Shrewsbury Commons Avenue. Investigators say Markowski robbed the pharmacy at gunpoint and was trying to flee when he was stopped by a responding state trooper in the entrance way of the store. The trooper ordered Markowski to drop his weapon, but he refused and pointed his shotgun at the officer, according to Trooper Robert Hicks, a state police spokesman.
The trooper, who has not been identified, was able to push the barrel away. Markowski was able to fire off one round and, simultaneously, the trooper shot his gun, hitting Markowski in the chest, Hicks said.

Everybody was panicking and freaking out, Witness from Shrewsbury Walmart shooting tells his story

SHREWSBURY, Pa.-- When Stanley Vetock went into the Shrewsbury Walmart Thursday night, he sensed something wasn't right.
"Walked in the back door, and then there was silence," he said. "It was odd and then there was a pop."
Pennsylvania State Police said 57-year-old Thomas Markowski attempted to rob the pharmacy department. Court documents say he called the pharmacy and asked for four boxes of Fentanyl. When the store said they did, he said he would come back later.
Later in the day, Markowski came to the pharmacy and demanded the four boxes of Fentanyl. He told the pharmacist he had a gun and she had five seconds to do it. The pharmacy called 911 and gave Markowski the drugs.
