Bernie Sanders says he met with Pope Francis.
BY KEN THOMAS
APR. 16, 2016 3:46 AM EDT
ROME (AP) Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says in an interview with The Associated Press that he met with Pope Francis.
Sanders says the meeting took place Saturday morning before the pope left for his one-day visit to Greece. He says he was honored by the meeting, and that he told the pope he appreciated the message that he is sending the world about the need to inject morality and justice into the world economy. Sanders says it's a message he has been sending as well.
Sanders traveled to Rome to attend a Vatican conference on economic inequality and climate change. He is an admirer of the pope and has praised the pope's views on poverty and the environment.

As for meeting with the Pope, I'm inclined to accept his account conditionally. As is normal for politicians, he lies when there will be significant benefit to his campaign and this would be significantly beneficial. But, the man could just become President of the United States, and it seems reasonable the Pope might choose to recognize that and not completely ignore his presence at the Vatican.
However, if it took place, it was discreet and they were not photographed together, or at least no photographs have been released. A quiet statement from the Vatican will probably follow on this, as happened before in a similar situation -- remember County Clerk Kim Davis from Kentucky?

(1 post)I have to laugh at Sanders supporters who are so blinded by either their love of Sanders or hatred of Clinton, that they are completely ignoring how farcical it is that Sanders is gushing about a man who heads an institution that actively and aggressively lobbies against reproductive rights all over the world, and while this may seem benign in the US, where most Catholics use birth control and have access to it and legal abortion as well, there is nothing benign about it in majority Catholic nations that are dealing with issues Americans can not imagine. The two presidents that attending the conference, Rafael Correra and Evo Morales, are both left-leaning on economic issues (ie socialist), but to the HARD right on social issues. Both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have lambasted both nations for the record on reproductive rights. Half of maternal deaths in Ecuador are due to botched abortions, access to birth control is extremely limited - the head of the government agency in charge of reducing teen pregnancy is an anti-abortionist associated with the highly conservative Opus Dei, and preaches abstinence as a solution. Evo Morales, president of Bolivia, is nearly as bad, because although abortion is supposed to now be legal in Bolivia (unlike Ecuador where it is only legal if there is a high risk to the mother or in the case of rape of a mentally challenged woman), he has done all he could do prevent access to abortion and birth control.
These are not men any progressive would want to be associated with, and frankly, seeing pics of Sanders warmly shaking the hand of Evo Morales and sitting beside him smiling and chatting with him, really turned my stomach, as it should anyone who believed that Sanders was all about speaking the truth. This Pope is not more progressive than any other Pope - while it is good that he has spoken out about excess wealth and corporatism (fully in line with Church doctrine) this does not mean he is a 'good guy', he is not grandpa who has some old fashioned views but is basically benign, he is the leader of a Church with one billion followers and said only last year that the use of condoms could be spreading aids. He is completely opposed to the ordination of women, gay rights, and reproductive rights. But pedophile priests are okay - they can just be shifted to another diocese. If I was a man whose popularity was based on being someone who 'told it like it is' and 'stood up for the little guy' I would not want to go anywhere near the Vatican unless I used the opportunity to point out the disconnect between preventing access to birth control and claiming to want to help the poor.

The invitation to Sanders to address that session raised eyebrows when it was announced and touched off allegations that the senator lobbied for the invitation.
But the chancellor for the pontifical academy, Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, said he invited Sanders because he was the only U.S. presidential candidate who showed deep interest in the teachings of Francis.

Both the Pope and Bernie are interested in drawing public attention to the lack of economic justice in the world today. The Pope is interested in this issue because most if not almost all of the message of Jesus if you actually read the four Gospels is about helping the poor, shunning excessive wealth and economic justice.
Bernie has been a vocal admirer of the Pope for a long time. There is nothing new about this. I don't believe that Hillary is the avid admirer of the Pope that Bernie is. She has not spoken of the Pope as often as Bernie has to my knowledge.
When it comes to economics, the Pope and Bernie agree on the central points. That is what is important here.

On edit, several reports of the Pope's words include the Sanders did know the Pope was leaving at the time he came down and shook hands. That is no more stalking than people wanting to shake hands with Hillary after she speaks.

About the pope, first they were saying if there are no photo's that the meeting didn't happen. Now they're saying that he laid in wait for the pope and "stepped in front" of him, that he "ambushed" the pope.
I think funniest though was when they realized he was going to the Vatican and they were hysterically going on about how he should be staying home to campaign. You'd think they'd actually be glad he went out of town for a couple days and wasn't in New York to hold any more massive rallys.

457. There is nothing bigoted about the fact
There there is only one right you do not have. And people who give no credit to Obama for what he did already while making as if it is the only issue that matters are just wrong. There's always going to be some new demand. I am a woman and we don't have all our rights all the time, or some are threatened, but this is the US where we can talk about it, protest and I don't go around saying I have no rights. Not when looking at women in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia for instance.
If I am a bigot for caring about other issues, then fine. I don't think gay marriage is the only civil rights issue there is. Or the only issue that matters. And there is free speech. And the rest of the bill of rights. You should be ashamed for not caring about anyone or anything else.

I am sure that the Pope meets a great many people that share his very altruistic views on the matter, besides, but including Sanders.
He could have simply gone about his busy schedule, but it says a lot to me that he recognizes Sanders as an ally in this endeavor worthy of taking the time to talk with him.
Anybody would feel honored by such a gesture, and many Americans are proud, or they should be, of our representative at this forum. Such is not an honor many enjoy.
For once, our country was seen in a positive light in the world, not the first time since Bush and others ruined our world reputation, certainly, but one of only a few examples of something that other countries can view as positive and that might prove very helpful regarding the difficult task our country faces due to bad past decisions to be seen again as a positive force globally as we once were.

Real devout Catholics are Republicans now anyway, as they are so rabid about abortion - they don't care about the economy.
More progressive ones are not so stupid that a mere visit to the Pope renders them unable to think about the issues or electability.
Divernan
(15,480 posts)And they should be. Progressive Catholics are already supporting Bernie. True, many Catholics are Republican - I went to high school with a bunch of them - but they are horrified at the GOP line up and don't want to vote for any of those clowns. They have disliked both Clintons for decades. The Pope's reaching out to Bernie will indeed have a YUGE impact on them and how they vote. Everyone knows this - and that is why the swarm of HRC supporters has been going nuts attacking the whole concept of Bernie's visit to the Vatican.
You think devout Catholics are "rabid about abortion"? Love the way you put that! Guaranteed to offend to the max! I'll tell you what very devout Catholics, especially the women, are offended by. Bill Clinton's serial adulteries. They feel Hillary should either have gotten him under control or left him.
Oh, and thank you as well for insulting all devout Catholics as in "they don't care about the economy". Well done, you! Keep up your excellent anti-Catholic posting. Hillary is shedding Catholic supporters in record numbers, even as you post. I suggest you write a letter to the editor of your local paper repeating your astute analysis of those rabid Catholics.

Anecdotal, however, that's likely the best we have.

95. It is an Irish and Celtic symbol.
It is also a common pagan symbol. However, it is also used by neo-Nazis and when this was pointed out a few weeks back, some people decided it would be a "good time" to change their avatars. To me, that was a move to mock anti-Semitism, not express pride in Irish/Celtic heritage or paganism.
Before a few weeks ago, I never batted an eye when I saw that avatar, because the person baring it was either pagan or Celtic oriented, usually the former. Then I started seeing them all over the place and was really confused as to why. I was then told what had happened and given that three of the first people I saw using it have had incidents of anti-Semitism in their past, I knew it wasn't about "pride" of any kind, but about mocking Jews and anti-Semitism.
It is a definitely a symbol, at least in travels, associated with pagans, but I have seen it used by many neo-Nazis. It is a situation where context will determine whether it is being used for good or ill.

(7,886 posts)That's two links on this guy that shows true colors. As for the Irish pride thing...
A bit of a history lesson. There is another symbol that held deep meaning for many people until Nazis tainted it forever. Those people, instead of trying to reclaim it signed a pledge to ban it's use, because they recognized what it meant to the world, and to the millions murdered under it's image. That people are using it now when antisemitism is a big concern is troubling.

(59,501 posts)I have no connection to Kim Davis. I have two brilliant gay daughters, both of whom I hope will marry women they love. I have a sister, who found the love of her life around the time I found my husband. I will soon celebrate my 31 anniversay. They, though together as long, couldn't marry for decades. My Midwestern family, I am proud to say, considered them married for decades before they could.
Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders should not be considered enemies, but competitors to get the Democratic nomination. Nor should rival factions here smear each other. I have seen your posts for years, and you mine. I do not think I deserved that obnoxious crack. This place needs more civility.

The kind of negative, spiteful spin you and other Clinton supporters have put on this whole papal conference & Bernie Sanders being asked to participate in it, is so offensive to Catholics, as well as anyone else of the millions of Americans who admire this new Pope - way to go!
Keep it up! Please! Hope you've written a letter to your local paper with your views on the subject!

(6,007 posts)The invitation to Sanders to address the Vatican conference raised eyebrows when it was announced last week and touched off allegations that the senator lobbied for the invitation.
But the chancellor for the pontifical academy, Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, said he invited Sanders because he was the only U.S. presidential candidate who showed deep interest in the teachings of Francis.
Divernan
(15,480 posts)Sanders said it was a brief meeting at the papal residence. "I told him that I was incredibly appreciative of the incredible role that he is playing in this planet in discussing issues about the need for an economy based on morality, not greed."
Sanders and wife, Jane, stayed overnight at the pope's residence, the Domus Santa Marta hotel in the Vatican gardens, on the same floor as the pope. They were seen at the hotel reception, carrying their own bags.
Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, a Sanders foreign policy adviser and adviser to the United Nations on climate change, said there were no photographs taken of the meeting.
The Vatican is loathe to get involved in electoral campaigns, and usually tries to avoid any perception of partisanship as far as the pope is concerned. Popes rarely travel to countries during the thick of political campaigns, knowing a papal photo op with the sitting head of state can be exploited for political ends.
However, Francis has been known to flout Vatican protocol, and the meeting with Sanders is evidence that his personal desires often trump Vatican diplomacy.

(3,426 posts)and so it seems Bernie demonstrated he too does not prefer to be waited on hand and foot. Yep the pope noticed the luggage being hand carried by Bernie and his wife-moderation in deed. Yep ,a political sign of moderation. But the trip isn't billed as political . And of course Bernie wasn't prepped as to how to make himself and his wife appear to be more-so outstanding in the eyes of the pope. But there was nothing political about that right ? The yep in his interview prior to the flight to Italy seems to connect into Bernie having been prepped as to how to appear at the departure scene. So he got to meet the pope ,-yep he did.Did he know how it would come about ? Yep he did.
And is there a whole lot of political maneuvering going on ? Yep there is.
What exactly does it all mean ? I think that is the question. The luggage bags, the old compact car the pope drives himself.

(73 posts)After some will-he-or-won't-he intrigue, Bernie Sanders finally did get his meeting with Pope Francis on Saturday morning in Vatican City. Although the presidential hopeful was seemingly ecstatic about the very brief encounter, the pontiff did his best to play it down, characterizing it as pretty much a quick hello. "When I came down, I greeted them, shook their hands and nothing more, the pope told reporters. This is good manners. It's called good manners and not getting mixed up in politics. If anyone thinks that greeting someone means getting involved in politics, they should see a psychiatrist.
