Georgia governor OKs state funds for anti-abortion centers

Source: The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia can give state money to "pregnancy resource centers" that offer medical and other services to pregnant women while discouraging them from getting abortions, under legislation signed by Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.

The governor signed the bill Tuesday in a private ceremony and didn't release a statement on it.

The sponsor, Sen. Renee Unterman of Buford, called the program a "positive" response to videos released this summer by abortion opponents showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing procedures for obtaining tissue from aborted fetuses for research. A Texas grand jury later cleared the organization of wrongdoing.

Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania have similar programs benefiting pregnancy centers. Opponents say the facilities use deceptive advertising to bring women in but won't discuss all legal options.

So, the "Evil, Greed-Driven Planned Parenthood" bullshit is apparently still playing in the Peachtree State, huh?

... what happened to the pitiful cries of "Nobody should have to contribute their tax dollars for something they are opposed to or feel is morally wrong!"

Oh, right - that only applies when they want to deny others equal rights, health care, birth control, etc. When the shoe's on the other foot, that mindset goes right out the window.

I understand the annoyance that they discourage people from acquiring an abortion and the typical GOP bullshit, but PCCs do provide care for low income mothers-to-be when access to other resources is unavailable. I know people who work at a nearby Pregnancy Care Center (operating without state funding), and some of these workers are pro choice, but there is no Planned Parenthood within 200 miles, and many of our mothers still need help. In rural Maine, access to prenatal care and infant services is often lacking and PCCs help.

Besides, if a pregnant woman is unaware that abortion exists then there are far deeper issues in that situation than just access to a Constitutionally protected service.

I don't care if they fund the centers as long as they don't pull funding from Planned Parenthood.

who plan on keeping their babies. What these places want is adoption. Always adoption.

I would also like to comment on this idiotic statement from the article:

"you're going to look closer at what we can do to ensure women truly are making choices and not just being caught in a for-profit business scheme."

This is so condescending and incredibly dishonest. Women are not being manipulated into abortion. And it is the pro-life movement that wants to deny women the right to make a choice, including through the use of PRCs and all the lies that they tell.

And there is a hell of a lot of profit involved in the adoption industry.
