Republican Cruz to name Fiorina as his No. 2: media report
Source: Reuters
U.S. Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Wednesday was expected to announce that former business executive Carly Fiorina will be his vice presidential running mate if he wins his party's nomination, ABC affiliate WMUR reported, citing unnamed sources.
The report by WMUR, an ABC station in Manchester, New Hampshire, followed a statement from Cruz that he would make a major announcement at a 4 p.m. EDT rally. He gave no further details.
Fiorina, 61, endorsed Cruz, a 45-year-old U.S. senator from Texas, for the nomination in March, one month after dropping out of the Republican race herself.
The announcement of a running mate at this point in the campaign would be unusually early. Traditionally, the winners of the Republican and Democratic nominating contests announce their running mates for November's general election at their parties' summer national conventions.

(24,780 posts)Promising a position in exchange for support? This seems no different than Trump offering Carson a cabinet position in exchange for support.

(94,503 posts)This is an attempt to look "Presidential" going into the convention fight.
Unfortunately, this is one of those laws on the books that never really gets applied, does it?

(13,889 posts)Is it sort of skeevy, yeah, but there's nothing illegal about it. You can't promise professional jobs to people in return for support because then you're spending government funds while bypassing the recruitment process, but for jobs like cabinet members etc which are political appointments anyway, there's no problem. A president has the privilege to nominate people for senior offices per the Constitution. What s/he can't do is give away jobs to supporters that would normally have to be advertised to the public and involve a normal recruitment process of job interviews and so on.

(613 posts)I can sort of understand Cruz wanting to get a high profile female in his ranks. However, picking a high profile woman who can't win the support of women, in a primary season full of men, seems a mite self defeating.
Then again, this is Cruz.

(1,825 posts)...and she did win the Republican primary for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate.
I think it was a smart move by Cruz.
The Donald does not yet have this sewn up.

(14,591 posts)In 2010 there were more than 5.2 million registered Republicans in California. Only 4.2 million voted.
And if you don't think Drumpf has this sewn up, then you're not paying attention to the number of delegates he has after yesterday and the polling in the upcoming Republican primaries. He's over the top no matter how you slice it.

(10,857 posts)This could be way bigger than simply announcing a terrible former CEO as your running mate. In fact, it makes no sense at all, and might not even be legal, unless Ted is planning to run as an independent.
Doing it now avoids the bloodbath of a contested convention and provides time to gather the signatures to meet the ballot in most states.
Cruz might have just decided to run as the spoiler. For a couple of greedy sociopaths, it's a pretty good gig: run an easy-breezy campaign, go light on the spending while the billionaires throw money at you, and pocket the campaign war-chest at the end.
If you're lucky, you've given the voting machines a chance to steal a hundred-or so electoral votes from the Democratic nominee, the House protects itself by not selecting the President, and Paul Ryan inherits the White House. You're the hero, everyone owes you a favor, and you just bagged a hundred million bucks in donations.
Damn. I wonder if that's the plan?

(1,807 posts)I like the way you think.
He may very well be thinking just that. Attract the moneyed #NeverTrump , Republican mainstream crowd and their resources and run as the "real Republican."
Say what you will about him but I think this is clever.
By the way, the first state signature deadline (to get on the Nov ballot as an independent) is coming up next month -- and it is Texas.

Cruz is so predictable. Pandering to the females here.

As a Texas Democrat, I'm rejoicing at Cruz having to resort to such desperate measures.
