Republicans beginning to make peace with Trump as nominee

Source: Wash. Post

WASHINGTON — They thought it was impossible. Some still fear it. Others can barely believe it. But leading Republicans are beginning to accept the idea that Donald Trump will be their party’s presidential nominee.

In the wake of the businessman’s commanding wins in five Eastern states this week, a growing number of national Republicans and GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill say Trump has taken on an indisputable air of inevitability. Some argue they should get behind him now and abandon the “Never Trump” efforts still nursed by some establishment Republicans. Embracing Trump, these Republicans say, may be the GOP’s only hope of blocking Democrat Hillary Clinton in November.

“Donald Trump is going to be our nominee,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott wrote on Facebook this week. “The Republican leaders in Washington did not choose him, but the Republican voters across America did choose him. The voters have spoken.”

“Republicans now need to come together,” Scott wrote, warning that continued opposition to Trump “will be nothing more than a contribution to the Clinton campaign.”

Photo caption: "Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., listens to testimony from State Department officials as the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington. Congressional Republicans are beginning to accept, and even embrace, an outcome that was once unthinkable: Donald Trump as the GOP presidential nominee. “I don’t understand. I mean, it’s not ‘Never Trump.’ It’s ‘Never Hillary.’ Never, never, never, Hillary. Come on. Wake up and smell the coffee,” said Kelly, who earlier this week cast his ballot for Trump, along with all members of his large family and 57 percent of Republican primary voters in his state."

Republicans will rally around their nominee and turn out in droves to defeat Clinton. Anyone who believe this election will be a shoo-in for the Democrat are in lala land.

The sad part is, most of that batshit craziness he spews are things the rest of the GOP wants to say. Come October, all will be forgotten as the GOP trots Trump around like a prized pony.

A very small handful of more moderate (probably Northeast-dwelling) Republicans may buck the lemming trend because Trump is just that crazy. Where Democrats can make head-way is with Independents. Always has been the case; always will be.

probably the fact that their other candidates were just as crappy as Trump helped them through the bargaining phase.

sad for them that these scars, so freshly healed, will be split open again by their preposterous convention this summer.

Trump values are inconsistent with 2/3 of the GOP rank and file. Ted Cruz
was right about that - New York values, or I would call them casino values.

Gambling. Glitz. These things undermine families. How can GOP voters
go for this?

Is he trying to undermine conservative GOP values? Because if they got
rolling, they'd be bad for casino business.

I just don't get it. Bloomberg is running a piece tonight saying that
Trump is ill-prepared to vet a VP candidate or fundraise for his campaign.
Everything is seat of the pants with him. Slough it off, whatever you feel like.
Mentally lazy. I would say that's the dominant operative here.

This is the third election in a row where Republicans have served themselves a shit sandwich. Really the sixth, going back to Bob Dole, but Bush the Lesser got close enough to steal it.

But it's not true that they all line up to take a bite. Each time, more and more of them stay home, and some of them never come back because Republican efforts to deny healthcare, tank the economy, and freeze wages are beginning to show results in the obituary pages.

I may live to dance and piss on the Republican Party's grave, at the same time. You, uh, might want to keep away from me when I do.

Check registrations early and more than once.

Help people maintain or get valid ID to comply with laws, however ridiculous. Driving people to government offices can help those who have no access, ... one way to help.

Talk up the importance of voting when talking with progressives, liberals, democrats, independents, and undecideds.

And much more.

I voted for Sanders in the WV primary today and I'll vote for H. Clinton in the general election, but I see her as a very weak candidate. Things will get better when Sanders throws his support to Clinton, but I still fear that many Democrats will stay home on election day. The possibility of any of the evil republicans becoming president is frightening.

They can't carry an election by themselves anymore.

Only Dems can defeat themselves.

Some perspective http://www.cbsnews.com/news/cbs-poll-hillary-clinton-leads-donald-trump-but-voters-view-both-unfavorably/

Independents vote Democratic against both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz no matter which candidate runs against them. Trump does particularly poorly with independents, losing them by 18 points against Clinton and 26 points against Sanders.

In contrast, just about half of Republicans view Donald Trump favorably, while less than half have favorable opinions of Ted Cruz or John Kasich. Negative views are also higher among Republicans for their candidates, particularly for Trump and Cruz -- about a third of Republicans have unfavorable opinions of each of them

This hair on fire nonsense is getting old.

both the House and Senate and most state governments is irrelevant in the presidential election. Especially considering that this is the new era of Citizens United, when wealthy right-wing corporatists can spend unlimited amounts to install a republican puppet regime. Talk about being ignorant of the "different variables in the elections." I must not be sniffing the same vapors as those who think a Trump presidency is not a real possibility.

Presidential candidates win states, just like senators. Nationwide head-to-head polls are truly meaningless.

And FYI, nobody educated in political matters calls congressional elections "local" elections. As a matter of fact, not even state government elections are called "local" elections.

But I tell you what, Professor. I'll bookmark this thread. If Clinton wins in a landslide, I'll publicly declare you a political genius. Has to be by more than, let's say, 40 electoral votes.

Anyway, since you've already decided that Clinton will win in a landslide, I'm sure you've done your homework. Tell me which states you think Clinton will win in her landslide victory --- or, since it's a landslide that you've predicted, just tell me the states you think she won't win. LOL.
