Heidi Cruz: 'Ted is an immigrant'
Source: The Hill
Heidi Cruz referred to husband, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, as an immigrant during an Indiana campaign stop on Saturday, prompting the campaign to say she misspoke.
Ted is an immigrant, Heidi Cruz said. He is Hispanic. We can unify this party.
* * *
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump was asked about the statement in an interview Sunday with Fox News's Geraldo Rivera, who is Hispanic.
Its just so bad. Let me tell you. I assume shes saying hes an immigrant from Canada. Because you know he lived in Canada for the first four years of his life. Not an immigrant like I think shes referring to, Trump said. Shes, I assume, referring to one of your areas of the world. Right, Geraldo?"

The pandering continues. Ted Cruz's wife tries to play up her husband's diversity as both an immigrant and a Hispanic, which is a big oops. Of course, Trump gleefully ties together his anti-immigrant racist rants with his anti-Cruz rant:

His wife just said my husband is an immigrant, Trump said Sunday.
And I said, when I heard it, 'Thats what Ive been saying.'

(168 posts)Yes he was born in Canada. His Mother may or may not have been a USA citizen at the time. However, since Cruz is such a fan of "original intent" regarding the US Constitution, I am surprised he doesn't know why he isn't a "natural born citizen". The reason is that lineage passed from Father to son and not from Mother to son when the Constitution was written and it has never been changed as it relates to "natural born citizen". Therefore since his Father was not a US citizen, he is not a US citizen.

First off. Obama was born in the US, so the discussion about whether or not his parents were citizens is irrelevant.
Secondly, the post was a criticism of Cruz's purported subscription to the constitutional philosophy of "original intent." The fact is that if he believes that the beliefs and intentions of the founders at the time that the constitution of 1787 was drafted provide the only valid means for constitutional interpretation, then he is not a "natural born citizen" by that standard due to the prevailing belief at the time that lineage only passed through the father.
The Obama birthers keep moronically forgetting he was born on US soil. Cruz wasn't. Who are the idiots saying Cruz is qualified to run for president? Repuglicans love to break the laws for their own stupidity.

Natural born meant someone born here, or born here before the US was founded.
Before 1787, no one was born in the United States because we were colonies.
Natural rights predated the Constitution.
Founders didn't want foreign usurpers. They'd seen enough of that in European
Royalty intermarriages and alliance by marriage.
Cruz is ineligible.

(49,047 posts)Cruz is a US citizen by way of his mother, assuming she retained her US citizenship. He was naturalized automatically at birth, but is not natural born.
Cruz is not eligible to be PotUS.

(10,303 posts)Sadly because I wish the Canadian-Cuban wasn't eligible, not because someone born with US citizenship is considered a natural born citizen. The courts have it right.

(3,768 posts)he probably won't be the nominee. Trump scares me, but Cruz scares me more.

(10,303 posts)Technically he's eligible to hold both the US presidency and the office of Prime Minister of Canada. We could have a President who is subject to the rule of Queen Elizabeth II.
Canadians should never run for President of the United States of America. Unless the USA and Canada merge, which will not happen any time soon.
Bernardo de La Paz
(49,047 posts)His mother was a Canadian citizen (probably dual with retained US citizenship) at the time of his birth and his father a Cuban citizen.
Notice of his birth was not filed in a timely way, which is proper practice for children born outside of the USA to US citizens. So there is also some ambiguity there.
