MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines' tough-talking city mayor Rodrigo Duterte had a commanding lead with 40 percent of votes in Monday's presidential election, according to an unofficial tally of ballots counted from half the electorate.
Figures from the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, which is accredited by the election commission, showed Duterte with more than 9 million votes at the halfway stage of counting, or 39 percent of the total.
His nearest rival Grace Poe had 22.2 percent of the vote.
There are 54 million registered Filipino voters.

Sure looks like Duterte is going to win this. Somewhat shocking as the establishment (President Aquino) didnt endorse him.
Its going to be interesting to see how this guy actually governs the country. He did great things as Mayor of Davao.. a major city in Mindanao which is in the southern part of the country.
He is being called the "Filipino Trump" for his brash talking but that is not fair as Duterte is the real deal. He is a self made man, lawyer, and long time mayor and a great proponent for the poor people and vigorously anti-crime and anti-corruption. He is actually more like Bernie Sanders than Trump... imo.

(11,348 posts)Duterte definitely brought that to the table.
He is liked in the North and South of the country. Hope he helps their economy and infrastructure. Rampant corruption is their biggest problem.

(24,689 posts)They are tired of the corruption and wealth going to the elite and connected. There are some similarities to what Sanders has done here. Alot of discussion and activity on social media that helped Dutarte. It will be interesting to see what he does once in office. I am hopeful.

(559 posts)He's definitely not a Sanders type AT ALL. This guy is worse than Trump in his rhetoric and proposals. He definitely has serious dictator traits that I am not excited about. The fact that he wants to bring about death squads, executions from drug/crime charges, limit rights for minorities/LGBTQ community, is all troubling.
This is very scary times in the Pilipinas right now.

Its probably the safest cleanest place in all of the Philippines. This guy appears to be the "benevolent dictator" type that many countries like the Philippines needs to clean up deep rooted problems of corruption and crime.

(24,689 posts)He has been mayor of Davao city for 22 years and they just voted for him something like 95%. And across the country people are sick of the corruption and crime and want somebody like him to clean it up and they dont care how brutal he is if it stops the bad guys.

(24,689 posts)Sometimes countries like the Philippines need that type of leader to clean up deep rooted problems of corruption and crime. We will see how this plays out because he is definitely going to win by a huge margin.
