Alameda County eyes ban on fracking

Source: East Bay Times

LIVERMORE -- Determined to expand a grass-roots campaign against fracking, environmentalists are pressing Alameda County leaders to be the first in the Bay Area to ban the controversial oil-drilling practice they say threatens to pollute underground water aquifers.

Alameda County planning commissioners on May 23 are scheduled to vote on an ordinance banning fracking and other intensive oil-recovery methods as several other California counties consider similar measures. If passed then, it would go on to the county board of supervisors for final approval.

Alameda could become the first of the Bay Area's nine counties to ban fracking, though the impact might be minimal given the lack of production in the region. But it is far from alone in targeting the practice, which uses pressurized water and chemicals to extract oil from tight geological formations.

Fracking. I gleaned it off one of David Swanson's topics on his wonderful blog.

The state governments are useless, it seems. When Gov Jerry Brown throws his hands up despairingly and states, "Well there is just nothing I can do," a person has to wonder about it all.

I mean, individuals get fined thousands of dollars a month for leaking water and using too much. And that can be a totally innocent outcome of not having adequate plumbing.

But fracking operations take millions of gallons a week, and nothing can be done?

Anyway will be back later today with the info from Swanson.
