California sees flood of new voters spurred by presidential race
Source: SF Chronicle
The nations hard-fought presidential primary contests have brought more than 850,000 new voters onto Californias registration rolls, dwarfing numbers seen in 2008 and 2012, according to figures from the states 58 counties.
With the voter registration deadline for the June 7 primary coming up on Monday, those numbers are guaranteed to increase.
Were looking at a larger voter growth than ever seen before a primary, said Paul Mitchell, vice president of Political Data Inc., which compiled the registration data. Its double the preprimary growth in 2012.
Not surprisingly, the newly registered voters are overwhelmingly young people, with 37 percent under 25 and 64 percent 35 or younger. Many of the older voters are probably new citizens or people who have moved to California from other states.

(57,936 posts)if they decided to be Independent make sure they are not signing up for the Independent Party.
They are two different things.
One is an individual Independent,
the other is a neo Nazi group and if you join them you cannot vote in the Democratic Primary
Make sure you are not joining their party.

(6,279 posts)New York's closed primary cost Sanders a lot of support. But it's also true what you point out, it's not just about the age of the voters.
That's HUUUUGE! Now I see why they can't wait to get him out of the race. I'm bookmarking that one.

(9,314 posts)openly an orchestrated effort to make Sanders drop out. We always knew California was looking very favorably at Sanders, and apparently this has his opposition extremely worried. And so they should be.

(57,936 posts)more difficult. The question is whether they will print enough ballots for the voters who decline to state a party preference because many of them want to vote for Bernie based on my experience.

(9,314 posts)She had read in her handbook to give those crossing over a particular ballot, entitled something like "Democratic Crossover" ballot. When she was in training, they were instructed to give those voters a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are often not counted, so she called someone up the line and asked about this particular instruction. She was told it was incorrect and to stick to handing out the ballot discussed in the handbook. She was also asked to spread the word to other poll workers in case they had been "misinformed."

Will someone please repost the 1983 photo of young Bill sitting with George Wallace and Bush Sr at the Bush Family BBQ in at their home in Kennebunkport, ME.

(58,785 posts)If only 5% more kids voted Democrat nationally, not just for president, it would shift the national balance of power away from conservative forces to liberal. It'd be huge.
As for being influenced by Bernie voters, fortunately a large block is fellow fairly well informed liberals of all ages, and they're fine. I declined him because I decided he was blowing smoke about what he could achieve, and because I questioned if where he would draw limits on his actions is where I would (turned out to be justified), but I fully understand their desire to push for, to demand "more."
The rest of Bernie's followers, though -- the irrational partisans, the earnest-but-clueless newly involved, the resentful anti-establishments and "where's mines," the hyper-righteous radicals, the malicious anti-Hillary meanies, the fifth-column conservatives? No way! Like most of us watching this berner stew boil from a distance, I just wish Bernie would turn the heat down under them.

(57,936 posts)I've been talking to.
I've been helping to register some of those voters.
Today, two young women begged me for Bernie buttons. I had run out, so I had to take one off my hat to give to one of them. Both underage and not voting. But they have mothers. The young people persuade their parents to vote for Bernie.
One thing I notice about the young voters is that they know precisely what it is that they like about Bernie. They take their civic responsibility very seriously. It's the issues, as one young Bernie supporter said to me.
Hillary voted for the Iraq War Resolution. I'm sure she thought it was a good idea at the time -- but today's youth are not so persuaded.
Today's young people face debt for their college loans and then low-paying jobs when they graduate from college. They are very worried about their economic futures. Hillary has nothing to offer them but more of the same old, "We'll just grow the economy and you'll get part of it." Today's young people know what that means: The economy grows, but the growth goes mostly to the very rich. Very little of the benefit from that growth will go to them.
So, feel the Bern because America's and especially from what I have seen, California's young people do.
So do I.

(5,082 posts)One I will never understand. Hillary lies. She cheats. She suppresses. She is the candidate of war. Of the .01%. Of decades of oppressive drug wars on people here at home. I'm glad I'm on Bernies team. I will never support someone who has alliances with the Bush family.

(57,936 posts)Do Hillary supporters have a problem with the fact that Californians want to exercise their right to vote?
There will be trouble for Hillary in November thanks to that kind of attitude on the parts of her supporters.
We are the most liberal state in the country.
We got pushed to the back of the bus when it comes to our chance to vote.
And now we are told that our votes won't count.
Well, I will say for myself that I don't think that I need to vote for Hillary in November because if Trump is the Republican candidate, my vote won't count then either. It won't be needed.
This is my one chance to vote for Bernie, and I am going to enjoy it thoroughly.
At 72, this is the first time in my life that I am in the United States and can vote for a candidate that I support 100%.
I've worked, campaigned as well as voted for Democrats all the portions of my life that I have been in the US, but this is the first time that I get to vote for a candidate like Bernie, one I can honestly and fully support.
You had better believe that we in California will vote for Bernie.
This is the most meaningful vote in my life.
Feel the Bern! Cause no matter the outcome of the election, we Berniebros are not going away.

(9,070 posts)In the other, less aggressive scenario, lets say she comes up short on some of the above numbers. She picks up fewer superdelegates, or she doesnt win quite as many pledged delegates in the territories. In that case shell pick up enough proportional delegates in New Jersey, win or lose, when the polls close there on June 7th to put her over the top. Shell mathematically clinch the nomination on the east coast a few hours before the polls close in California on the west coast.
So while there are too many variables to predict whether Hillary Clinton will clinch on June 5th or on June 7th, the one thing that is clear is shell clinch before the California results come in. If she then wins the Golden State, its a bonus. If she loses it, it becomes the fleeting touchdown that her defeated opponent scored too late. In any case it means she can head into the June 14th Washington DC caucus (which shell likely win) with the nomination already firmly in hand, essentially using it as a closing victory lap.
